K-pop has always been a uniquely captivating experience that has attracted fans around the world, and within the past decade, there’s been an even larger audience eager to engage in whatever the next innovative, visionary group brings to the table. Whether it’s through an appreciation for comprehensive music, bold concepts, fusing talent, or even genuinely humble personality traits, the vastly growing space has an abundance of creative prerequisites that makes South Korea’s music scene one of the most formidable industries for an artist to enter, and impact in recent years.

Though, it’s K-pop’s next-gen digital-savvy rookie group PLAVE (@plave_official) that has taken each of those hard-to-obtain, quintessential ingredients – along with meta-verse capabilities that are still fresh to the music world – and turned their exemplary, mixed-media conception into the most impressive group debut of 2023 so far. But why is PLAVE so worthy of such a respected stature? For starters, it’s well-rounded quality content. As musicians, the concept group has released three tracks to date ranging in style and genre, stemming from their first single “Wait for you” on the group’s debut single album Asterum, imploring listeners to recognize PLAVE as a unit of trained vocalists.

The rapidly-evolving group’s first b-side track “Pixel world” takes a much-needed mid-tempo pop music side-quest by easing audiences into their more relaxed state of mind – catering to each member’s admirable skill set in order to effortlessly showcase their flexibility. More recently, PLAVE’s second official single “Why?” continued their promising pattern of masterful music by keeping listeners on edge through the introduction of their most charismatic, pastel-tinted contribution to the music industry yet.

Still, outside of studio sessions, their cumulative content goes far beyond the general “expectations” of a standard pop group by pulling from a variety of entertainment platforms to design the ultimate immersive experience. On their YouTube channel alone, the five-member unit regularly designates several days out of their week to live-stream with fans, engaging in diverse interests such as the most satisfying horror gameplay imaginable, spontaneous live vocals, and dance lessons that typically revert back to the magnetic song “Rover”. Though more importantly, PLAVE’s media-heavy passions have demonstrated that they’re fully equipped to offer infectious energy to fans on a regular basis.

With all five members actively infiltrating the digital era in order to become the next “it group”– we’re thrilled to offer you the full PLAVE experience in our new digital cover story with Hamin, Yejun, Eunho, Bamby, and Noah

Firstly, it’s nice to virtually meet you and I’m so excited to work on this unique cover story together! In your own words, what is PLAVE and what’s your group’s mission when it comes to this industry?

Yejun: PLAVE is a group of five singers who have come from Asterum to bring a positive impact through music and performance. We would like to bring great joy to those of you living in TERRA through our music and stage.

PLAVE bridges so many magnificent mediums, which arguably makes you one of the most ambitious concepts we’ve seen in a long time. What’s one specific memory or experience from this introductory chapter that you’ll cherish for the rest of your lives?

Hamin: Since our debut stage, we feel like dreaming every day and we want to treasure each moment. The love that our fans showed us made every moment unforgettable. It’s hard to choose just one, but the most impressive experience is our Music Core stage, where the fantastic stage setup combined with PLAVE’s music created a unique scene that only PLAVE could deliver to the audience.

Your debut song “Wait For You” is something that’s totally ingrained in my mind and I love how you don’t pull any punches with your vocal capabilities! Did the song’s level of difficulty cause any nerves considering it was your first song together – or were you all just excited to prove yourselves with the challenge?

Bamby: We made the song by ourselves, and throughout the production process, we put in a lot of effort to highlight each member’s individual characteristics. As we were working on the song, we felt that it had the potential to receive a lot of love from the audience. During dance rehearsals, we became confident that we could deliver a great performance on stage.

“Pixel World” steps into a nice mid-tempo R&B/Pop combination that’s impossible not to love, but it’s also so different from “Wait For You”. What genre or subgenre would you each say best describes your own style?

Noah: Our team already pursued a band sound-based style, which was in line with the message we wanted to convey through “Wait For You”. However, not only the band sound, but we also hope to present a diverse range of music across different genres. And our new song “Why?” is a very lively and refreshing dance song that has a very different vibe from “Wait For You”, “Why?” conveys a fresh and vibrant feeling, just like the early summer breeze. We won’t be stuck in one genre, and you can expect us to be constantly evolving.

Another aspect that’s really worth loving when it comes to your group is the magnetic combination of personalities! You’re each so different, but in ways that actually complement each other really well. How has your PLAVE bond changed each of your lives for the better since debuting?

Bamby: Just like you mentioned, we all have unique strengths and can support each other, so we rely on one another a lot. PLAVE has made a significant positive impact on my life, making it much more beautiful.

Hamin: As the youngest, I receive a lot of love, and I want to grow big enough to make up for the lacking parts of Hyungdle [older brothers].

Noah: Since our debut, we have been receiving a lot of attention, and we are quickly preparing for PLAVE’s next album in order to show even better performances for our loving fans.

Eunho: After our debut, we got closer and became friends, and I feel more grateful to the fans who support us, so I want to repay them even more.

Yejun: PLAVE team members give me a sense of stability and confidence,  I feel that both my music and my life are developing in a better direction with PLAVE members.

I have to say – your live streams are epic. There’s everything from hilarious conversations to choreography lessons, the always amazing horror game playthroughs, spontaneous vocal covers, and even the occasional mishaps that go viral on social media. What would you each say is your favorite thing to do when it comes to streaming?

Eunho: I can’t choose my favorite genre because I just enjoy the live broadcast itself so much. But if I had to choose, maybe dance? [laughs] I’m just kidding. I really enjoy the talking sessions where we can chat with our fans and help them with their problems. The karaoke content is also really fun!

We already discussed group chemistry and live streams, so with that in mind, who would you each choose as your own perfect streaming partner within the group and why?

Yejun: For me, Hamin is the perfect partner. Because he is the direct junior of Ye Line.

Hamin: ..Noah? Just kidding. Of course, it’s Yejun. I am Ye Line and it doesn’t need any words.

Bamby: It’s Eunho for me. He is a talented younger brother to serve me as an older brother.

Eunho: All members are great, but if I have to pick one, it’s Noah hyung! The reason is that Noah hyung has a definite sense of broadcasting [laughs].

Noah: Each member has different chemistry, and I think all members are perfect broadcasting partners because we always do fun broadcasts!

You also play into the limitless perks of being a digital group by including some dazzling music video visuals and even a few unnatural abilities. If you could currently pick any type of massive concept that you want to create as PLAVE, what would it look and sound like?

Noah: As we briefly mentioned earlier, we don’t want to be remembered as a group that is necessarily limited to one genre or as typical musicians. We want to be a group that can perfectly digest various genres and emotions in music. In addition, we do want to show visually unique aspects that other groups cannot show. For example, scenes of war with villains or energy waves coming out of our hands, things like that would be fun.

Since your content is so immersive, people feel so in tune with PLAVE already and that’s an exciting achievement. In order for fans to get to know the members of PLAVE a little better individually, what’s one thing that people would be shocked to discover about you?

Eunho: Actually, I am a scary wolf.

Noah: Actually, we are all musclemen.

Bamby: Actually, Eunho is a really good dancer.

Yejun: I may look gentle, but I also have a tough charm.

Hamin: The members’ ability to learn is so amazing that I’m excited and thrilled to imagine what they’ll look like tomorrow, next week, a month from now, and even a year from now.
