THE EDITORIAL EXPLORES HOW MEDIA AND ADVERTISING INFLUENCE PERCEPTIONS AND BEHAVIORS, TRANSFORMING NEW YORK INTO A COMMERCIAL BRAND, REDUCING IT TO A SIMPLE LOGO OR SLOGAN.
“THE CITY HAS BEEN PROMOTED AS A COMMERCIAL PRODUCT, OFTEN AT THE EXPENSE OF ITS CULTURAL AUTHENTICITY” THE VISION OF NEW YORK CONTAMINATED BY EXCESS VISUAL AND CULTURAL EXPOSURE, VICTIM AND ARCHITECT OF A SYSTEM THAT MAKES IT AN ICON AND FETISH.
THE STYLING PROJECT IS INTENDED AS A VISUAL CRITIQUE OF THE WAY IN WHICH THE AMERICAN IMAGINATION, LINKED TO NEW YORK, IS TRANSFORMED INTO A COMMODITY, EMPTIED OF ITS AUTHENTICITY AND MADE AN ACCESSORY OF GLOBAL CONSUMPTION.
THE FOCUS WILL BE ON THE IRONIC AND DELIBERATELY EXAGGERATED APPROPRIATION OF THE SYMBOLIC OBJECTS OF AMERICAN CONSUMERISM AND MEDIA.
