The Hooligan Metaphor

The editorial centers on the concept of the “hooligan,” not in its literal sense of violence, but as a visual metaphor for identity, rebellion, and a sense of youth belonging. The narrative explores the raw energy and emotional contradictions of subcultural masculinity, highlighting the tension between aggression and vulnerability.

To reinforce the concept, an unpolished, urban environmenT — such as streets and underpasses — was chosen. These transitional, gritty spaces served as a stage, adding authenticity and emotional grit by balancing the styling with reality.

Technically, the usual photographic equipment was maintained, but a distinctive color correction was applied: vintage and retro. This key post-production decision was made so the images would look “older,” as if captured with analog film cameras, mimicking an old-school film aesthetic.

The main influences stem from British subcultural photography and the visual language of the 80s and 90s, referencing artists like Derek Ridgers and Nick Knight, alongside the aesthetic of “terrace culture.” Collaboration was fundamental: the stylist blended streetwear and high-end fashion, while the makeup artist and assistants contributed to maintaining authenticity and the spontaneous flow of the shoot, ultimately elevating a rough subcultural energy into a cohesive visual story.
