re/edit opens a new door into Manfred Thierry Mugler’s audacious body of work by focusing on his ready-to-wear and couture collections between 1985 and 2000. The capsule centres on three enduring codes: Sculptural Tailoring, Lingerie as Outerwear, and the Red Carpet. Looks have been selected from the collections of Hiver Pop (F/W 1985-1986), Hiver Russe (F/W 1986-87), Les Cow-Boys (S/S 1992), Cirque d’Hiver (F/W 1995-96), Les Amazones (F/W 1996-97), Les Chimères (F/W 1997-98), Jeu de Paume (S/S 1998), Lingerie (F/W 1998-99) and Les Méduses (F/W 1999-2000) among others.
Altogether, the selection underscores how Mugler’s iconoclastic vision translates to wardrobe pieces that resonate more than ever.
Sculptural Tailoring focuses on Mugler’s language of power dressing, with looks defined by sharply padded shoulders, cinched waists, and dramatically contoured silhouettes. The selection seduces with sophistication – from the sculpted pinstripe jacket with a straight slit skirt and the scarf-collared red tailored suit, to the military-style trench coat and shirt dress, both with bold buckle details. A fencing-inspired corset and vinyl leggings return, as well as a suit, unconventionally cut to reveal a trompe l’œil tank.
Lingerie as Outerwear, a Mugler signature since the 1990s, is reinterpreted with confident precision.
Ruffled slip dresses, dresses with garter details, and sheer illusion fabrics highlight the designer’s use of intimacy as public expression. Where satin corsets and bra tops turn boudoir dressing into declarative fashion, an optical striped knit dress brings an enticing interplay of reveal and conceal.
Red Carpet represents Mugler’s unique ability to infuse the classic elegance of a black velvet gown with unexpected edge. Glamour is subverted to dramatic effect with an open gown built around a maillot-corset. The illusion nude sequin bodice and skirt echo Mugler’s legendary runway moments.
Along with a plush, faux fur coat in iridescent grey, these creations defy convention with the kind of extreme artistry that attracts attention as though channelling the spirit of Old Hollywood.
