“I don’t think fashion has to change every five minutes. I’d like these to be clothes you can wear for a long time“, Tom Ford once said.
In these simple words we find the very meaning of sartorial heritage, of elegance.
At eighteen (at the end of my high school years) I made the mistake of enrolling in the Law course at the Federico II University of Naples (thinking of becoming a notary). I hated it.
And so, rather than attending classes, I spent my mornings in via Filangieri in the atelier/shop of the renowned Argenio that for generations has sewn splendid tailor-made suits for Parthenopean men (and not only). The process of making them (from the choice of fabrics to the first fitting) enchanted me.
“It’s a suit for life, it’s a suit to pass on,” Mr. Salvatore used to say.
That’s why I care so much about this year’s MET Gala theme.
Superfine: Tailoring Black Style is – in my mind and in my heart – a precious tribute to that memory.
It is a rarefied hymn to what fashion has been and what fashion should be.
Some have celebrated it in the most appropriate way (in my opinion, of course):
