2023 has been stacked with unforgettable debuts, including fresh, influential names like PLAVE, 8TURN, and xikers – but as of now, the highly-anticipated Fantagio group LUN8 is officially one of the next reputable superstar rookie units to completely thrive upon launch. And with eight distinctive personas contributing their own particular niche skill or charm, the youthful K-pop collective is going to irrefutably shine for years to come.

Even ahead of their introduction to the world via music, the dazzling group’s endearing YouTube content (primarily via Real! LUN8) served as a prime example of their pure-hearted comradery, showcasing all of the team-building skills they’ve garnered as a youthful boyband. Though throughout its run, the well-balanced roster still actively makes an effort to celebrate their own respective sense of individuality through humor, fashion, art, or even relatable household responsibilities like cleaning dishes (because EunSeop’s versatile skillset and unshakable optimism exceed all expectations).

By the time the group dropped their first mini-album Continue? in June, LUN8’s buzzworthy debut drew inspiration from several musical categories including a wide scope of lo-fi pop, early ‘00s rock-pop hybrids, hip-hop undertones, and even a colorful disco-tinted zest – pulling out all the stops to dominate a rookie group’s most challenging era. So much so, the group provided listeners with two epic tracks, “Wild Heart”, and “Voyager”, because, with such a strong showing of sound, it would feel irresponsible to ignore the mainstream potential of these starkly different high-caliber creations.

In order to continue appealing to curious listeners, the group’s creative aspirations naturally led them to an immersive visual aid designed to depict LUN8’s fearless vitality in the “Wild Heart” music video, combining an upbeat atmosphere and colorful styling with a fast-paced speedway backdrop. Conversely, in the much softer and rather effective video for “Voyager”, LUN8 strips it all back for a more nautical motif with a desire to seek out adventure, giving the ambitious group a down-to-earth alternative to cherish. So needless to say, we’re certain that the future is full of excitement for K-pop’s warm, gracious new group.

As our new digital cover group, each member of LUN8 sat down to discuss the promising artistic journey that brought them all together.

Firstly, congratulations on your debut and being the first all-male group on your label to debut since the influential ASTRO! How did you initially react to the news that you’d be a part of the next generation of K-pop?

Takuma: My first thought was to thank everyone who supported and helped us to come this far. Please look forward to seeing LUN8’s various charms in the future!

EunSeop: I’ve been working hard with the goal of debuting for a long time without a break, so I was super happy to achieve my goal. Now it’s a new start, so please look forward to it!

I genuinely love that your name and concept are completely tethered to the moon! How do you hope to lean into that concept when it comes to your music or overarching story?

JunWoo: I really liked the meaning and the vibe of the word “moon”. Since the word “moon” also reflects the meaning of LUN8 always being there for you, I was very satisfied with the meaning.

Ian: I was truly satisfied with the meaning. After learning the meaning behind LUN8, I fell more deeply in love with our name.

Now that you’re really getting to know each other and have established a definitive sound together – how would you say your first single accurately represents LUN8’s group identity?

JinSu: I would like to define us using only one word – ‘LUN8’ – since it’s our first time showing LUN8’s music to the world.

What was the first song on the mini-album that you recorded together, and how would you describe that first-time studio experience?

Chael: I really wanted to monitor my voice, and I remember being surprised and flustered when I heard my voice on the song for the first time.

JiEunHo: I remember struggling a lot with how to sing properly when I was first recording in the studio because my voice sounded awkward and strange to me.

From my perspective, it appears that LUN8 embodies several of the qualities that you’d anticipate from a youthful, energetic addition to K-pop. That being said, what’s something about LUN8 that’s bound to surprise people when they first encounter your music?

JinSu: There are a lot more things we can do, so LUN8 will always do our best.

JunWoo: I think our strength is teamwork. I feel like we can adapt quickly and get through anything if we’re together!

EunSeop: I think the strength of LUN8 is the voice tone. Our songs have a rich sound because all the members have charming voices.

There’s a solid selection of performance-focused content on your YouTube channel for fans to engage with – which is a nice way to witness the skill set of LUN8 both as a group and individually. How did it feel to finally get the opportunity to perform your own music?

Ian: It’s going to be a precious memory. I am tremendously happy!

JiEunHo: I always wanted to make music that people could empathize with and find comfort in, and I’m so happy that we are able to achieve that goal with this release.

It also seems like you’ve formed several tight-knit bonds amongst one another which is vital to a group’s longevity! Who would you each say has been a constant source of support during this pre-debut time, and in what way?

Chael: All the members supported each other. We always practice in a fun atmosphere because everyone is gentle to each other and also playful.

Takuma: All the members have dedicated a lot of time to have engaging conversations!

CONTINUE? includes plenty of fun visual concepts including a more laid-back gamer vibe and even a nautical-esque beachy look. What style would you say is the best fit for the group as a whole during your rookie era?

JinSu: There are a lot of things that I haven’t spotted while practicing, and us being on stage is our best fit.

Chael: We liked both concepts, the game, and the beach. The concept of the game looked fun and the beach seemed like the best fit for us.

Takuma: I’ll choose the beach because we are fresh!

JunWoo: I loved them all. I think the concept of the game at the beach made our charms stand out more!

DoHyun: I liked the picture of the beach because the outdoor sunlight made the scenery beautiful.

Ian: I really like the picture of us biting a rose in the game concept.

JiEunHo: I like our freshness so the beach concept is my favorite.

EunSeop: Since this is our debut, I like every concept and I’m just thankful for them.

I’ve enjoyed seeing a more personal perspective through your pre-debut series Real! LUN8 which shows your eagerness to start this journey together! Who would you currently say is the most natural on-camera, and who is probably the most reserved in those settings?

JunWoo: Real! LUN8 was really fun and brought back memories. For me, the nerve challenge was the most memorable episode!

EunSeop: It was funnier than I thought. I remember Chael and JiEunHo making breakfast after we all slept together in the living room. That is a happy memory because it was our first time sleeping together in one room!
