“Taking a cue from the 1920s Hollywood-themed film ‘Babylon’, designer Okamoto Tairiku’s collection juxtaposes dark, edgy pieces with bright casual wear.”
Retro Glam Meets Streetwear in DAIRIKU’s New Collection In a unique fusion of Hollywood’s vintage glam and contemporary streetwear, designer Okamoto Tairiku’s brand, “DAIRIKU,” unveiled its Spring/Summer 2024 collection at the New National Stadium’s parking lot. The collection, themed “MY HERO,” draws inspiration from the 1920s Hollywood-set film, “Babylon.” The show was opened with the arrival of two vintage American cars, adding an authentic touch to the Hollywood-themed backdrop.
DAIRIKU was established by Okamoto, who previously won the Grand Prize at the “Asia Fashion Collection,” a joint competition aimed at discovering young talents while he was enrolled at the Vantan Design Institute. His earnest pursuit of fashion design began in the Spring/Summer season of 2018, and by 2021, DAIRIKU was chosen for the “TOKYO FASHION AWARD” alongside brands like “SUGARHILL” and “KIDILL.”
The runway show starts with a black and white silent film-style production, echoing the narrative progression of “Babylon.” The story then shifts to a color sound film, beginning with a collection of dark-toned outfits incorporating rugged materials like leather. Midway through the show, the designs transition into a vibrant look using materials like denim and sweatshirts. To pair with the star-printed knitwear wrapped around the waist, the looks were matched with sneakers from the collaboration with “CONVERSE,” which was released in June.
