“The Renaissance of Dongbei” is a mural project that revives the Renaissance-style basilica facade of an old preserved winery in Shenyang, China, with a vibrant illustration that celebrates culture, industrialization, and architectural achievements. Created by the Drawing Architecture Studio, the mural artwork revives the tradition of Renaissance frescoes to illustrate a vivid remembrance of different aspects of Dongbei’s history and social life – encapsulating the industrial past, economic development, and cultural enrichment of the region.

The content of “The Renaissance of Dongbei” took inspiration from the cultural phenomenon of the same name, but the finished mural is, above all, a celebration of the optimistic spirit of the local community in the face of real-life difficulties. By assigning a renewed functionality to the winery’s transformation, the project, which is part of a larger regeneration plan, has been conceived with the intention of bringing new vitality to a historic building for the general public. “The importance of this project may lie in the power that images have in transforming space, and in the emotional connections that these can generate between them and the viewer,” says the Drawing Architecture Studio team.
Drawing Architecture Studio’s renovation project in Dong Mao Ku, China, transformed preserved warehouses into public spaces for the local community, including a bookstore, an entertainment center, and a gourmet restaurant, showcasing the different aspects of life in Dongbei. The mural project celebrates the cultural, industrial, and architectural achievements of the region and reimagines existing structures, such as the cooling towers of a power plant, a multi-story bathhouse, and an ice park.

The mural also revitalizes old worker villages and abandoned factories that had become symbols of the city’s decline, showing machines running at full speed to contribute to the country’s industrial development and workers returning to their clean homes after another day of work. The scenes are a reminder of the hardships faced by a generation due to economic transformation, behind the cheerful images.
