In 2001, Yohji Yamamoto revolutionized fashion with the birth of Y-3, the pioneering collaboration with adidas. Over two decades later, their partnership continues challenging the boundaries of avant-garde design and sportswear innovation. The Fall/Winter 2024 collection, showcased at Paris Fashion Week, epitomizes the fusion of organic and synthetic elements in fashion.
Stefano Pierre Beruschi, the head design director at Adidas Originals, partnerships, and Y-3, provided insights into the collection’s enduring relevance and impact. He recalled the astonishment of seeing the first Yohji Yamamoto adidas collaboration in 2002, a groundbreaking blend of sports and fashion.
Despite the saturated market of collaborations today, Y-3 remains a timeless mainstay, cherished across generations from Gen X to Millennials and now discovered by Gen Z. Yohji Yamamoto’s ongoing active involvement, alongside Stefano, is credited for the collaboration’s sustained success. Their approach combines raw, unconventional tailoring with a focus on maintaining their distinctive styles’ core principles and essence.
The Fall/Winter 2024/25 collection draws inspiration from invisible natural phenomena like infrared and soundwaves, characterized by fluidity. The pieces, with a color palette of crisp whites and stark blacks, include ultraviolet graphics, elegant knitwear, and innovative designs. Details like tie-dye finishes and metallic nylon add depth, while the use of performance materials like Gore-Tex and adidas tech fabrics in outerwear reflects a blend of Yohji’s archival styles with modern technology, offering warmth and a sense of insulation for the season.
