Today we talked with Korean model Woo Sik Kim, who recently started in the modeling industry but that hasn’t stopped him from building from scratch an amazing career in very little time. He has worked in New York, Milan London and Paris and he has done some Fashion Weeks as for example the Burberry Spring Summer 2020 show.
We asked him if he could give any kind of advice to young models so that they can achieve their dreams in a proper way, as well as understanding how this industry works. He encourages every young model to stay true to themselves and be themselves, not to change anything because that’s what makes us unique. Here is what he said.
“I honestly think it is really hard to be yourself in this industry. Some people are very fake, and some people try to change themselves so that they can be better.”
Q: Can you tell us a little biography to know you better?
A: Hi, my name is Woo Sik and I am 21 years old from South Korea. Even though I was born in Korea, I lived most of my life in America. When I was six years old, I moved to the US and started living there with my family. It is very ironic because English is a lot more comfortable to use for me than Korean. Before modeling, I was perusing Law at New York University before I got scouted by my amazing agent Patrick Egbon-Marshall in the last week of March of 2019. I visited London for my first time with two of my best friends from University and I was randomly patted on the back while walking down Oxford Circus by my agent. I did not know anything about modeling but Patrick really guided me in the right direction by giving me the best advice to become a good model. The next day he scheduled me two test shoots because I was leaving in two days so I gave it a try. And after two months, I was placed in NYC, Milan, London, and Paris and did my first ever fashion week in Europe in June! Everything was like a dream since I was a kid who always loved fashion and clothes and to be the person to walk for brands that I used to shop at was unbelievable to me. Now I am a full-time model because I took a gap year from NYU and I am enjoying every bit of experience that I am having as a model.
Q: How were you scouted and how did you feel when you did your first professional shooting?
A: As I mentioned above, I was scouted in London even though I am based in New York City. I planned a Europe trip with two of my best buddies from University and I was shooting around Oxford Circus when my agent Patrick patted me on the back. He handed me the Menace Model Management card and asked if I was interested in modeling. To be honest I have never imagined myself as a model before but Patrick really inspired me and gave me self esteem. I didn’t even discuss with my parents before telling him that I wanted to give it a try because fashion was always a part of my life. The next day I got scouted, he scheduled me two test shoots with very good photographers in London and that was when I knew this was legit. I was a bit nervous because I did not know how to pose or how to express myself in front of the camera but I really enjoyed it and when I knew that I enjoyed it, I decided to pursue this carrier.
Q: Which brand or photographer do you dream of working with?
A: My goal as a model is to walk for Dior. My favorite brand by far is Dior and Mr. Kim Jones is someone I admire the most as a designer.
Q: Which has been your favorite modeling experience?
A: My favorite modeling experience is when I walked for Burberry Spring Summer 2020 this year in September. I was able to walk with the best models around the world and the thrill that I got before I went out and did the catwalk was the best feeling of my life!
Q: Name three words that describe you.
A: Creative, Free and Stylish.
Q: And three words that describe Vanity Teen?
A: Youth, Platform and Fashion.
Q: Which do you think is the best social media platform to promote your work?
A: I think the best social media platform to promote myself and my work is Instagram. Nowadays, Instagram became a platform for everyone to express themselves and show who you are. I enjoy uploading my work on Instagram so others can see what I am doing.
Q: Would you like to give any kind of advice to your models?
A: My advice is to be yourself. I honestly think it is really hard to be yourself in this industry. Some people are very fake, and some people try to change themselves so that they can be better. However, what really makes you shine in the industry is your style, your manners, and your look. So don’t try to be someone else or try to change yourself, just be yourself and things will come to you as you don’t expect it!
