Return of the Rubber Ducks: Florentijn Hofman’s Iconic Installations Grace Hong Kong Once Again

A decade after its inaugural appearance, Dutch artist Florentijn Hofman‘s colossal Rubber Duck series has made a grand return to Hong Kong. However, this time around, the city will be graced by not one, but “DOUBLE DUCKS,” signifying double the luck and happiness.

The Philosophy Behind “Double Ducks”

As the organizers mention, “In Chinese saying, good things come in pairs.” The return as “DOUBLE DUCKS” is inspired by the symmetrical characters ‘囍’ (happiness) and ‘朋’ (friends), symbolizing mutual prosperity in partnerships, and friendships, and doubling the happiness of unity.

Hofman’s Giant Rubber Ducks Around the Globe

Florentijn Hofman, the Dutch creator behind the giant rubber ducks, is fondly known for his playful approach to art. His philosophy is quite simple – “I am a big kid,” he states. “What I do is play around the world with my works. I throw them in the air, as kids do with their toys, and leave them scattered all over the house.”

Hofman’s Rubber Duck project began touring the world in 2007, sailing to locations such as São Paulo, Osaka, Toronto, Los Angeles, Seoul, and many more. His larger-than-life ducks have been seen in over 50 cities worldwide since their debut.

The Unforgettable Exhibition

For the ducks’ 10th-anniversary visit, the creative brand AllRightsReserved, supported by the Hong Kong Tourism Board, has taken charge. The 18-meter tall ducks will be stationed near Tamar Park, Central, and Western Promenade during their time in the city.

The exhibition is set to commence at Victoria Harbour on June 10, where citizens can view the “DOUBLE DUCKS” along the harbor. A limited-edition merchandise collection will also become available starting June 5.

Hofman’s creations, like their ephemeral nature, are fleeting but memorable. “I like working in public spaces because we all have access to them, and we can start a conversation with people from scratch. If you know what you’re seeing will disappear soon, it stays fresher in your head, you keep it longer in your memory, and it becomes a common memory with the people you met,” he concludes.

Witness the imminent transformation of Victoria Harbour into a colossal bathtub, with the “DOUBLE DUCKS” playfully contrasting with the vibrant skyline. This unique panorama promises to be a fascinating sight for all visitors.
