Matthew Sato is part of the widely-expected fourth season of High School Musical: The Musical: The Series. So, before the SAG-AFTRA strike, we talked with him about this new experience, his roots, support, and love for the Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders communities, his career, everyday life, future projects, and everything else you wanted to know.
What I liked the most about this conversation was what he called: my understanding of the world, which is his global vision of multiculturalism as a way to take the best of each of us and enlighten the world with positivity. And I know you will adore that too!
So, as you get ready to watch him as Mack in Disney’s High School Musical: The Musical: The Series, we invite you to enjoy this exclusive interview with Matthew Keoni Sato for Vanity Teen.

My understanding of the world
JV: What do you cherish the most about coming from multicultural origins?
MS: Coming from multicultural origins, I cherish the opportunity to embrace, represent and celebrate the diversity of my heritage. It has given me a unique perspective, allowing me to connect with people from various backgrounds on a deeper level. The cultural awareness that comes with my multicultural upbringing enhances my understanding of the world and enriches my experiences as an actor.
JV: How did you get into the acting and modeling world?
MS: My journey into the acting and modeling world began with a combination of passion, dedication, and hard work. I started by participating in local theater productions and talent showcases, which allowed me to gain experience and develop my skills.
Alongside acting, I became interested in modeling and began attending auditions and casting calls. Through lots of auditioning and perseverance, I was fortunate to land some roles that further opened doors for me in the industry. It has been an exciting and fulfilling journey so far, and I’m grateful for the opportunities that have come my way.
JV: Doogie Kamealoha, M.D. became a big step in your career. What do you like the most about this show and portraying Kai Kamealoha?
MS: Being a part of Doogie Kamealoha, M.D. was, indeed, a significant step in my career, and I’m incredibly grateful for the opportunity. What I love most about the show is its unique blend of heartfelt storytelling, relatable characters, and the exploration of the AAPI experience.
Portraying Kai Kamealoha has been a privilege because he is a well-rounded character with depth and complexity. Kai’s journey allows me to showcase not only his emotional intelligence and ambition but also his vulnerabilities and growth as he navigates the challenges of growing up. It’s a joy to be part of a show that celebrates diversity and brings meaningful representation to the screen.

Something totally new for me
JV: Currently, you are part of Disney’s High School Musical: The Musical: The Series. So, what can you share about Mack, your character, and the new season?
MS: I can’t say much, but I will let you know that Mack was something totally new for me, and you have to watch it! I am incredibly grateful to be part of a project like this, especially because it’s a musical!
The team behind the show is truly incredible, from the talented cast to the dedicated crew. It’s inspiring to witness their passion and dedication in bringing this musical series to life. I feel privileged to be surrounded by such talented individuals who continuously push the boundaries of creativity and storytelling.
JV: How do you feel combining two of your passions: music and acting?
MS: Combining music and acting is an absolute dream come true. It’s an exhilarating experience to be able to bring both of these creative outlets together in one project.
Music has always been a big part of my life, and acting allows me to explore different characters and tell compelling stories. Combining the two allows me to express myself and connect with audiences in a unique way.
JV: What is your favorite part about being a young person who does what he loves?
MS: My favorite part about being a young person who does what he loves is the sense of fulfillment and joy it brings. Pursuing my passion at a young age allows me to explore and grow creatively while staying true to myself. It’s a constant reminder that age is not a barrier to following your dreams.
Embrace the journey
JV: How do you take care of your mind and body?
MS: Taking care of my mind and body is a priority for me. I stay physically fit through regular exercise, which not only benefits my physical health but also helps manage stress.
I prioritize a balanced diet and nourish my body with nutritious foods (as much as I can. Though, I am a total foodie, and if you put something tasty in front of me, I’m eating it despite the consequences.)
Mental health is super important to me, and I maintain it by engaging in hobbies. I love fishing and hiking, and without these hobbies, I don’t know where I would be today.
Self-care is a personal journey, and I adapt my practices to find balance and promote well-being.
JV: What plans do you have for the future?
MS: I have several plans and aspirations for the future. I aim to continue honing my skills as an actor and expanding my range by exploring diverse roles and genres.
I am passionate about storytelling and would love to work on projects that push boundaries and create a positive impact.
Alongside my acting career, I am excited to explore opportunities in other creative avenues, such as producing, directing & writing. Ultimately, my goal is to contribute to the entertainment industry in meaningful ways and continue to grow, both personally and professionally.
JV: Which message do you have for those who support your projects and show you love on social media?
MS: I am incredibly grateful for the support and love I receive from my fans and supporters on social media. Your support motivates me to continue pursuing my passions and fuels my drive to deliver my best in every project.
Thank you for being amazing fans! You mean the world to me!
JV: Anything else you would like to share with Vanity Teen?
MS: I want to encourage all the young people out there to pursue their passions and follow their dreams. Don’t let anything hold you back from going after what you love!
Embrace the journey, surround yourself with positivity, and fearlessly make your mark on the world. Aloha!

Before we go
Matthew Sato is like that friend from high school you want to spend time with the most, invite for dinner, and beg your parents to let him stay! Just like a few people in the world, he has that feel-good energy we all appreciate. During our conversation, he could not say it better: life is similar to a personal journey we all must face and enjoy.
I hope we all can share how he understands the world as a space where cultural awareness does not lead us to spiteful feelings but make us more tolerant, kind, and joyful!
So, now that you had the opportunity to know him better, you can happily go and have a great time by binge-watching his most recent projects.
Love!
