Lorenzo Musetti is a young professional tennis player who is well-known in sports because he started to be part of the ATP while he still was playing in junior competitions. He is Italian and was born in 2002, but despite being a teenager he has been working hard in pursuing his dream of becoming a great professional athlete.
We had a conversation to talk about him and his tennis career. Particularly, I consider his words to be very kind and inspiring, especially to all the teenagers who might look up to him as an example of a spirited person who is able to talk about the perks of staying focused on what you want.
Let us keep reading to see what he said, and discover his message.
Q: You were born in 2002 and yet you worked hard to become a professional tennis player in 2019. Do you remember how did you react when you found out the good news? How was that journey on becoming a member of the ATP?
Yes, in 2019 I got my first ATP ranking points as a professional having won a few matches, so I knew I would see my name in the pro rankings for the first time. I was still also competing in the junior circuit, so I was juggling two things.
Q: Being a teenager might cause a lot of pressure; even more, if you have to stay focus on achieving your professional goals. How do you manage your mental health? And, what do you do to stay safe during the hard times the world is going through?
Someone once said to me: “pressure is a privilege for very few people”. So I consider myself privileged to have pressure in doing what I love the most.
As per the current times, I just focus to respect the rules, and I am confident we will come out of these tragic times soon and stronger.
Q: What can you tell us about Simone Tartarini? Who is he and why is so important to you?
Simone is much more than a coach for me, I started practicing with him when I was 9 and it’s been a few years that I spend much more time with him than with my family! He is my coach, friend, second father; he is a huge part of my life.
Q: The ones who love tennis like me cannot forget two important milestones in your career we witnessed during the last semester of 2020. What can you tell us about your matches against two athletes we all admire: Stan Wawrinka and Kei Nishikori?
I remember the excitement before, during, and after those matches. Obviously, I had seen them on TV winning matches and tournaments, and from one day to another, I was on the court playing against them. It was a great feeling to prepare those matches against such champions, to compete against them at the Italian Open, and winning those matches on top of it all was just incredible.
Q: For you, 2021 started with the AmEx-Istanbul Challenger. How important was your first victory in two sets?
I am glad to win my first match of the year; needless to say, my ambition is to win many, many more in 2021!
Q: What other plans do you have for this year?
I would really love to be able to play a full season on the Tour, and to play all the most important tournaments against all the best players, to learn a lot about the game and myself; if so, I am sure by the end of 2021 I will be a better player and a better person.
Q: Let us talk about a different topic. Is there any or food you really like but know you just have to keep it away due to your training?
I love my grandma gnocchi; unfortunately, I don’t find them around when I travel ☹
I actually like fashion, I am a young man, and when I have time, I like to go and shop, to buy some original items that I can wear and that reflect who I am.
I would suggest them to have fun every day, as with fun you will have the enthusiasm to train hard and improve.
Q: Anything else you would like to share with Vanity Teen?
Before we go
Lorenzo Musetti is very young and is willing to keep showing us the great tennis player he is. Let us continue to follow his career and support him in every tournament; but most importantly, as he said: let us follow the rules that could help us to stay safe and protect us, the ones we love, and every other person.
We all deserve love and kindness.
