Kim Jones’ Dior Fall/Winter 2024/25 Collection

Kim Jones, the visionary behind Dior’s latest collection, drew inspiration from the intriguing relationship between ballet dancer Margot Fonteyn and Monsieur Dior, along with Fonteyn’s famed dance partner, Rudolf Nureyev. Jones’ connection through his uncle, photographer Colin Jones, who was a ballet dancer and a friend of Nureyev, adds a unique layer to this narrative. The collection, presented in a grand theatre built on the École Militaire grounds, explores contrasts within the house of Dior: the interplay between ready-to-wear and haute couture, and the dichotomy of onstage glamour versus backstage reality.

The show, was attended by luminaries like Pharrell Williams, Kate Moss, Luther Ford, Princess Eugenie, and Rita Ora, as well as house ambassadors including Haerin from NewJeans, Jung Hae-in, Tomorrow X Together, Apo Natawin, and Mile Phakphum, commenced spectacularly with Sergei Prokofiev’s “Dance of Knights,” reimagined by Max Richter. This set the stage for a collection honoring Nureyev, renowned for his portrayal of Romeo.

Jones infused the collection with the elegance and flamboyance of Nureyev, translating it into both ready-to-wear and couture. Artisans in Japan took three months to craft kimonos, influenced by Nureyev’s collection of vintage textiles. The pieces strike a balance between ballet neutrals and theatrical elements like crystal embellishments and mesh tops. Zipped wool jumpsuits echoed Nureyev’s off-stage 70s style, as captured in Colin Jones’ photography, while turbans and pearl-adorned earlobes hinted at the grandeur of attending the ballet.
