It’s official: the Metaverse Fashion Week has arrived in Decentraland

Metaverse Fashion Week in Decentraland demonstrate that fashion industry is working in its own future

A few months ago, the information of the first Metaverse Fashion Week (MFW) in history took us by surprise. We have been witnesses of tech industry’s quickly advance. Nevertheless, we neve thought that the combination between that industry and the fashion one would be possible. Now, after some touchs between both industries, a real Metaverse Fashion Week in Decentraland has been created and some of the most important brands in the fashion market are participating.

Over the course of March 24-27, MFW is being celebrating in Decentraland. This is a VR platform in which you can buy NFT (non-fungible token) paying with a type of cryptocurrency called MANA. During the Metaverse Fashion Week some brands are organising digital runways composed by impossible designs in real life. Moreover, some fashion brands are openning digital shops instead of having a parade. There, users can buy digital clothes for their own avatars. It consists in buying garments in the same way as we usually do in the real life.

Digital fashion shows in Decentraland

Some of the most iconic brands in the fashion industry decided to make their debut in the Web3 through Metaverse Fashion Week. Dolce&Gabbana, Etro, Imitation of Christ or Elie Saab, among others, have decided to launch digital collections in Decentraland.

The Italian fashion brand Dolce&Gabbana made its debut the first day of this event. On Thursday 24 a countdown in the district whose coordinates are -100, -18 ended and the parade started. Stranger avatars that seemed to be cats marched with the new collection. Some outfits were impossible to make in real life, but others were inspired in the latest male collection (Autumn/Winter 2022-2023) presented in Milan Fashion Week. The aesthetic was a mix between the streetwear style presented in Milan (oversize clothes and graffiti prints) and the futuristic touch that corresponds to technology.

Flagship Stores

“Paris, Milano, New York, London, and now, Decentraland” say the platform. They have created a new fashion city in the industry landscape. Some brands have taken the opportunity to open new stores in Decentraland. Forever 21, Estée Lauder, Selfridges and Philipp Plein have become “permanent residents of Decentraland, showcasing their commitment to a new era in fashion“, as the organisation said.

Moreover, other brands like Mango have made their debut or first contact with NFT. Instead of opening a store or organising a parade, Mango decided to launch three NFT works of art that can be visited in Decentraland. Moreover, the brand also launched three ‘wearebles’ (digital clothes). With this, the Spanish brand introduces itself in the metaverse, which seems to be the future of fashion actually.

Are digital clothes the future of fashion?

After the pandemic caused by the coronavirus, the fashion industry experienced a digital transformation due to the impossibility of organising parades. As a result, the fashion and the videogames industry started having contact. At present, it seems that designing clothes for videogames is something that has become to last.

Many people buy clothes with the purpose of showing off them in social media. That is why designing digital clothes would allow this kind of people to continue showing off their clothes but without generating a climate impact. We have to be aware that fashion industry is one of the most polluting in the world.

Moreover, we are no just talking about digital clothes for being ‘worn by our self’. We are also talking about NFT and clothes that are going to be worn by our avatars in videogames. As we can see, VR and AR are gaining importance. The sensorial experience they provide to users is probably the future of the videogames industry. Having said that, why fashion industry was not going to design the future of clothes?
