What happens when a designer who spent a decade dismantling fashion’s rules is asked to define one of the most recognisable worlds in fashion?

Demna’s second ready-to-wear collection for Gucci is less interested in shocking the audience than in doing something considerably more difficult: establishing a system.

That distinction matters. His first Gucci collection, in February, was built around the body: sex, skin, tension, glamour, the memory of Tom Ford and the physical charge that once made Gucci one of fashion’s most potent fantasies. SS27 moves elsewhere. The body is still there, but it is dressed, socialised, categorised. It is given a wardrobe.

And the wardrobe comes with a building.

For The Store Show, Demna transformed the runway into a Gucci boutique: marble, shelves, merchandise, fitting rooms, staff, objects, clothes. The store was not merely a backdrop. It was the collection’s most revealing metaphor. Gucci was presented not as an abstract idea, but as a complete environment in which different versions of Gucci could coexist, circulate and ultimately be purchased.

That is the real subject of SS27.

Not the archetype alone.
Not the logo.
Not nostalgia.
Not even Demna himself.

The construction of a Gucci world.

FIRST, DEMNA BUILT THE CHARACTERS. NOW HE IS BUILDING THE WORLD

When Demna arrived at Gucci, the problem was never a lack of references. If anything, there were too many.

Gucci already contained almost a century of fashion mythology: Guccio Gucci and the Florentine origins of the house; luggage and leather goods; the Bamboo and the Horsebit; Hollywood glamour; the sexual revolution of Tom Ford; the romantic, intellectual excess of Alessandro Michele; the double G; the loafer; the Jackie; the logo; the celebrity; the influencer; the rapper; the aristocrat; the Italian bourgeoisie.

Gucci had become a kind of cultural archive in which contradictory identities were allowed to exist simultaneously.

Demna understood that immediately.

His own career had been built on precisely this kind of cultural archaeology. With Vetements, he took the clothes and symbols of ordinary life and made them strange again. At Balenciaga, he turned proportion, irony, celebrity, corporate branding, streetwear and luxury into a new grammar of desire. His method was rarely about inventing an object from nothing. It was about changing the context around something everyone already knew.

At Gucci, however, the material is more complicated.

He is not simply transforming fashion objects. He is transforming a mythology that already knows how to transform itself.

The first step was La Famiglia: a cast of exaggerated Gucci personalities, from the socialite to the narcissist, the aristocrat to the outsider. It was clever because it recognised something fundamental about luxury: people do not buy a brand only to acquire its products. They buy access to an identity, a social fiction, a role they can temporarily inhabit.

But there was also a danger.

The language of the “archetype” has become one of fashion’s most convenient shortcuts. Once everyone is a character, nobody is particularly interesting. The aristocrat becomes a costume. The eccentric becomes a styling exercise. The “cool girl” becomes a casting brief.

SS27 is where Demna starts moving beyond that problem.

Instead of presenting characters, he gives them infrastructure.

The rebellious aristocrat needs tailoring.
The snob needs a coat.
The eccentric needs eveningwear.
The bourgeois needs knitwear.
The outsider needs leather.
The celebrity needs something recognisable from across the street.

The archetype becomes a wardrobe.

And that is a much more sophisticated proposition.

The collection is full of familiar Gucci codes, but they are reorganised rather than simply quoted. Tailoring is broader and more authoritative. Shoulders become important again. Preppy references sit beside leather and denim. Polo shirts, rugby stripes, quilted outerwear, loafers, Horsebit hardware, office clothes and evening dresses occupy the same ecosystem.

There is less of the deliberately provocative collision that defined so much of Demna’s previous work.

That restraint is significant.

It suggests that Demna is beginning to understand Gucci not as a problem to disrupt, but as a system to edit.

And editing a system this powerful is, in itself, an act of authorship.

There are moments when it works exceptionally well. The strongest looks do not feel like demonstrations of cleverness. They feel inevitable. They make the Gucci codes look contemporary without pretending that the house needs to be reinvented from zero.

But the collection is not immune to repetition.

The Horsebit, the black-and-white contrasts, the broad shoulders, the preppy vocabulary, the deliberately recognisable Gucci gestures: when the codes are repeated too insistently, the distinction between establishing a language and advertising the language becomes thinner.

This is the unresolved tension at the centre of SS27.

Demna wants Gucci to feel unmistakable.

But unmistakability, pushed too far, becomes predictability.

FROM THE ARCHETYPE TO THE WARDROBE

There is something sociologically revealing about this shift.

For years, fashion has increasingly sold identity as a form of personal branding. We have been encouraged to dress as a type: quiet luxury, streetwear, old money, Y2K, office siren, gorpcore, whatever the algorithm happens to call it this week.

Demna’s Gucci operates at a different scale.

It does not ask you to choose one identity. It offers an entire catalogue of them.

This is where The Store Show becomes more interesting than the individual clothes.

A store is the physical architecture of choice. It is where fantasy encounters commerce. You enter as one person and leave with the possibility of becoming another. In that sense, the Gucci store is perhaps the most honest set Demna could have built.

The fantasy is no longer somewhere else.

It is merchandise.

This is not a criticism in itself. Luxury has always depended on this mechanism. What changes is the transparency of it.

The collection understands that contemporary luxury is increasingly about recognition: being seen, knowing the code, being able to identify the object and, crucially, having other people identify it too.

The Gucci Horsebit works because it is historical and immediately legible. The loafer works because it carries decades of social meaning before it even touches the foot. The shoulder works because it changes the silhouette before the viewer has time to process the garment itself.

Demna is therefore not simply designing clothes.

He is designing recognition.

And recognition is one of the most powerful currencies in contemporary fashion.

This is also why the move from spectacle to wardrobe matters.

The Times Square presentation had already pushed Gucci towards the idea of “Gucci-core”: a universe of essentials, recognisable staples and repeatable codes. SS27 takes that proposition further. The question is no longer whether Demna can make a memorable Gucci image.

He clearly can.

The question is whether he can make a Gucci wardrobe that remains desirable after the image disappears.

SS27 is his first serious answer.

THE STORE IS WHERE THE FANTASY BECOMES REAL

There is an almost circular logic to Demna’s Gucci.

Guccio Gucci built a business around the objects of travel and the fantasies of a wealthy international clientele. Tom Ford turned the house into an image of sex and power. Alessandro Michele turned it into a world of references, eccentricity and cultural accumulation.

Demna is doing something different.

He is trying to turn all those Guccis into one operating system.

That is why the store is such an effective idea. It allows contradiction without requiring resolution. The aristocrat and the rapper can occupy the same building. The preppy boy and the sex symbol can buy from the same shelves. The conservative handbag collector and the teenager discovering the Horsebit through social media are, from the perspective of the brand, equally legitimate Gucci subjects.

This is contemporary luxury at its most intelligent and its most commercial: not selling one identity, but selling the possibility of multiple identities under one name.

The risk is obvious.

If everything can be Gucci, then Gucci has to work harder to mean something.

And this is where SS27 remains imperfect. Some looks feel more like demonstrations of the house vocabulary than discoveries within it. Some familiar codes are pushed until they become almost self-conscious. There are moments when the collection seems to explain Gucci rather than simply being Gucci.

But when Demna stops explaining, the collection becomes considerably stronger.

The best clothes have no need for theory.

A coat has the right proportion.
A trouser has the right volume.
A loafer carries the right amount of history.
A dress understands the body without begging for attention.
A jacket looks as if it could have existed ten years ago and still make sense ten years from now.

That is the real achievement of SS27.

Not reinvention.

Continuity with a point of view.

Demna’s Gucci is beginning to look less like an intervention and more like an institution being rewritten from within.

And perhaps that is the more difficult job.

At Balenciaga, Demna could create tension by attacking convention. At Gucci, convention is the material. He cannot simply destroy the codes because the codes are the business, the history and the desire.

He has to make them live again.

SS27 suggests that he is starting to understand how.

The store, ultimately, is not just where Gucci sells the fantasy.

The store is the fantasy.

And Demna’s challenge from here is no longer to prove that he can make Gucci look like Demna.

It is to make Gucci feel so complete, so internally coherent, that we stop asking whose Gucci it is.

That is when the real Gucci system will begin.
