Icelandic artist Björk amazed her fans by incorporating over 800 drones into her performance at Coachella 2023 on Sunday, April 16th. The devices created mesmerizing visuals against the Californian sky.
The performance featured a career-spanning set and included a live orchestra led by Bjarni Frímann. Björk aimed for “simplicity” during her show but also utilized over 800 drones for an awe-inspiring visual spectacle in the Coachella sky. Initially, the performance was set to be live-streamed on Coachella’s YouTube channel. However, in a controversial decision, both Björk and Frank Ocean’s acts were pulled from the schedule just hours before they were set to take the stage.
Fan favorites like “Isobel,” “I’ve Seen It All,” “Hyperballad,” and “Joga” were accompanied by the drones, which created green, blue, and red displays. “I am excited to share with you that I joined 864 Drones tonight!” Björk later wrote on Instagram. “Tonight’s show was orchestral, which is me, all about simplicity [with a] live orchestra playing a selection of my songs,” she continued. “So in honor of the magnificent Coachella festival… I asked a drone company, Studio Drift, to join us.”
