Get ready to explore the musical universe of the legendary American painter, Jean-Michel Basquiat, at the Philharmonie de Paris in the groundbreaking exhibition, “Basquiat Soundtracks.” This immersive experience, running from April 6 to July 30, 2023, is the first of its kind, showcasing the powerful connection between Basquiat’s art and his love for music.

Though he left us in 1988 at just 27 years old, Basquiat’s impact continues to be felt in the art world. What some may not know is that before becoming a world-renowned painter, Basquiat was a key figure in the music scene as the unofficial leader of the band Gray. From sharing the stage with DNA and The Lounge Lizards to producing a rap single called “Beat Bop” (1983) by Rammellzee, music was a vital part of his life and artistic journey.

“Basquiat Soundtracks” is a feast for the senses, featuring nearly one hundred artworks alongside rare archival documents, emblematic instruments, and never-before-seen audiovisual media. The exhibition illuminates the ways in which music informed Basquiat’s visual work, with influences ranging from Beethoven to Madonna, Louis Armstrong to the Zulu Nation. Through this innovative presentation, visitors will gain fresh insight into Basquiat’s creative process.
To complement the exhibition, the Philharmonie de Paris has also curated an exclusive musical program from April 14 to 23, 2023. Highlights include American trumpeter Ambrose Akinmusire’s contemporary take on Charlie Parker‘s repertoire and pianist Chassol’s unique performance translating painting into music. Additionally, the “From Mali to the Mississippi” night, led by guitarist and singer Eric Bibb, will take audiences on a musical journey through Basquiat’s most significant influences, from West African griots to delta blues and Cajun zydeco.
Don’t miss this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to immerse yourself in the captivating world of Jean-Michel Basquiat’s art and music.
