We’re officially approaching the end of 2023, and it’s been a phenomenal year for K-pop. We’ve witnessed the evolution of K-pop artists who have been in the game for more than a decade, we’ve met brand new artists who are experiencing an explosive trajectory, and we’ve even savored the growing resurgence of survival show concept groups because there’s always a space for everyone to thrive.
Now, with more than 200 revolutionary releases behind us, we’re taking on the high-stress task of carefully selecting our favorite singles (or album title tracks) that masterfully represent everything 2023 has to offer. Let’s dive in!

“Unforgiven (featuring Nile Rodgers)” by LE SSERAFIM

LE SSERAFIM continues their streak of unapologetic bangers with their smash single “UNFORGIVEN,” masterfully living up to the magic of their God-tier pop hits such as “Antifragile” and “Fearless.” But what can we expect anything less from an impeccable group that’s able to deliver a rapid-fire chorus and a powerhouse Western theme? At this point, we’re betting it all on LE SSERAFIM in 2024.
“Bubble” by STAYC

STAYC already has its finger on the pulse of carefree pop music, so their infectious single “Bubble” is exactly what you’d expect given the name. It’s insanely fun from beginning to end, literally bursting with energy, and it’s a perfect avenue to showcase their understanding of glittery pop formulas.
“God of Music” by SEVENTEEN

If you spent any portion of the year seeking out a feel-good, ray of sunshine moment in K-pop, look no further than SEVENTEEN’s recent legendary track “God of Music.” The album itself quickly garnered a record-setting 5.2 million copies alone during its pre-orders, and thankfully, the band-textured, funky pop single lived up to every ounce of anticipation as a result of their consistently evolving talents.
“In Bloom” by ZEROBASEONE

ZEROBASEONE has become one of the most prominent groups to debut in the current fifth-gen landscape, rightfully setting several records along the way. And with their enthusiastic debut track “In Bloom,” the unstoppable group wastes no time spreading their expansive roots in this ‘80s-coded masterpiece.
“왜요 왜요 왜? (Why?)” by PLAVE

The incomparable concept group PLAVE (real people, depicted in digital form) has become one of our 2023 obsessions for their quirky live streams, distinctive personalities, and enticing discography, with our general admiration coming to a head in the easygoing anthem labeled “Why?” – a balanced song that taps into its member’s robust, lower register, then goes that opposite direction and delivers its necessary higher-pitched vocals with ease. We love a group that can do it all!
“Drama” by aespa

In their new single “Drama,” SM’s four-member girl group is choosing to embrace the chaos with their bold hip-hop dance track that’s officially one of the strongest in their discography. While the music video also gives the track an extra edge with a pristine Sin City aesthetic, the song itself easily holds up on its own with its strongest points being an infectious chorus and Ningning’s solid addition to the second verse.
“Kick It 4 Now” by THE NEW SIX

The ‘90s-saturated R&B reinvention of THE NEW SIX has acted as an incredible era for the down-to-earth group, led by the smoothly produced track “Kick It 4 Now.” As a contender for their best track so far, many (ourselves included) have found themselves drawn to the velvety pre-chorus lines, “Nostalgia, déjà vu / I’m comin’ back to you,” or the added raps within the second verse. Absolute fire.
“Galileo” by Kep1er

Keeping up with their group’s affinity for the galaxy, Kep1er’s fresh 2023 track “Galileo” was named after an astronomer and philosopher – but there’s certainly no heavy lifting or mathematics required to enjoy this gem from the reliable concept group. And thanks to their ability to alternate between a soft-spoken delivery and diverse vocals, they’ve now proven that they’re capable of merging two impactful styles to create one layered single.
“BONA BONA” by TREASURE

The K-pop group TREASURE has been working on amplifying their magnificent sound for several years now, but their recent track “BONA BONA” is their latest hit that’s meticulously reimagined their portrayal of hard-hitting pop. And through the careful coalescence of brass sounds, synths, and even a marching band feel, TREASURE’s “BONA BONA” is very much committed to keeping listeners coming back for more. Oh, and that bridge?! We’re obsessed.
“ONE MORE TIME” by BBGIRLS

We were truly devastated when it appeared that Brave Girls would be disbanding. But thankfully, the group was quickly able to rise from the ashes to embark on a brand new adventure as BBGIRLS by dropping their flawless single “ONE MORE TIME.” A massive reason the single still deserves your attention is the fact that it employs each member’s uniquely retro-charged strengths for the entire three-minute duration – leaving an auditory impression that can’t be replicated.
“꽃(FLOWER)” by JISOO

JISOO is an icon, so her first single was always going to be iconic. Still, we couldn’t have ever predicted just how much she would actually impress with her debut single “꽃(FLOWER),” becoming a masterclass on artistry courtesy of her instantly recognizable tone, sultry snap beats, and a theme about leaving toxicity in the rearview mirror. All things considered, this one is easily one of the most memorable tracks of the year.
“Super Shy” by NewJeans

The increasingly popular girl group NewJeans has already used their platform to become a staple in modern K-pop. However, their syrupy Y2K pop single “Super Shy” might just be their strongest track to date due to its bubblegum production and lyrical inclination to represent youthful infatuation. So if you haven’t already figured it out by now, the universally acclaimed song clearly obtains all of the ingredients to become a playlist essential for years to come.
“Nobody Knows” by KISS OF LIFE

After the launch of their exceptional mini-album this year, it was hard to imagine how they could surpass themselves – but their first comeback album pushed the group even further and introduced the world to their versatile album with one of two title tracks being jazzy, noir-themed “Nobody Knows.” Not only did the group raise the bar for themselves with the dark horse second single, but their precise execution of concept could cause others with similar aspirations to proceed with caution.
“Rover” by KAI

If for some bizarre reason, you haven’t already heard KAI’s 2023 hit “Rover” by now, you’ve been severely missing out on a legendary solo moment for the SM Entertainment talent. How so? Well, the chorus is easily one of the most memorable of the year, and its flute-heavy, dancehall production also plays a pivotal role in its current grasp on pop culture.
“TRICKY HOUSE” by xikers

Coming from the company that’s responsible for ATEEZ meant that there was immediately some unspoken pressure for the rookie group xikers, but with two major drops in 2023, they’ve already made big moves to create their own legacy. With “TRICKY HOUSE” specifically, the group introduces their natural passion for electronic tunes with a trance-like pop aptitude. And with that being said, we’re extremely eager to see how this passion develops in the years to come.
“Seven (feat. Latto)” by Jung Kook

Jung Kook has been busy this year, dropping multiple solo projects with our personal favorite being the hypnotic genre-fusion single titled “Seven (feat. Latto).” On a production scale, the song is already a top-notch release for implementing a guitar-riddled, garage pop pattern, that’s elevated by the performer’s striking falsetto skillset and a daunting technical approach to uptempo pop. We’re vibing with this one!
“CHEEKY” by EL7Z UP

Right from the start, we just knew that the legendary women on Queendom Puzzle would eventually offer the world something exciting – and the final lineup’s debut single “CHEEKY” subverted fans’ expectations by opting for a colorful track that’s all about the jovial elements of pop music. The biggest selling point of “Cheeky?” The group’s stability with both rappers and vocalists who each have something to contribute to the song. But we also have to briefly acknowledge that “Die for You” would have made a perfect second single!
“Rose Blossom” by H1-KEY

H1-KEY’s uplifting single “Rose Blossom” earned the group their biggest domestic release after becoming a sleeper track that’s now widely recognized by both industry peers and listeners who’ve been enamored by the vocal Olympics unfolding within the song’s post-chorus ad-libs. Here’s a moment of appreciation for an organic K-pop hit that’s bound to inspire!
“Island” by The Wind

The Wind is one of the younger rookie groups in the current K-pop scene, and with just one song they’ve already cemented themselves as unforgettable 2023 superstars courtesy of the catchy GFriend-esque track “Island.” Staying true to their youthful pop qualities, The Wind’s refreshing, nostalgia-driven debut single facilitates a breezy, (and still vocally taxing) nostalgic sound to the pop music world during a time when bubbly, cheerful concepts aren’t as commonly explored in modern K-pop boy bands. Well played!
“I AM” by IVE

IVE has given us several ambitious hits since their debut and in 2023 alone, but we’re as of now we’re completely captivated by their dynamic range in the highly-favored single “I AM.” More specifically, that bridge to pre-chorus slay that’s designed to have you playing the song back to back.
“Algorithm” by HeeJin

LOONA pioneer, ARTMS member, and soloist HeeJin is one of brightest voices in K-pop, and thankfully, her charming single “Algorithm” brilliantly lives up to the performer’s grand potential by taking her respect for Korean culture and combining it with classic ‘80s pop. When then paired with her already unique, raspy tones, the song goes from being a moment to being eternal.
“VROOM VROOM” by Weeekly

After four members of Weeekly participated in Queendom Puzzle earlier this year, it was absolutely thrilling to see the buzz-worthy girl group return with the immaculate single “VROOM VROOM” – an entirely addictive beachy pop song that’s capable of alleviating any potential stressors in your path. Give Weeekly the respect they so clearly deserve!
“봄바람 (Spring Breeze)” by KIM JAE HWAN

Soloist KIM JAE HWAN is serving some of the most adept, contemporary pop vocals with his underestimated and pensive track “Spring Breeze,” surrounding itself with classical technicality that’s flawless through and through. This one hit us hard upon the first listen. And second. And even on the fiftieth. You get the point.
