In the mesmerizing editorial “Whispers of the Sea,” photographer Willy Villacorta, alongside a talented creative team, transports us to a utopian world where pirates and hippies from Ibiza coexist harmoniously. This visual narrative seamlessly blends classic 15th-century tailoring with the spirituality of hippies, resulting in a collection that unfolds in a captivating blend of textures and styles.

Villacorta shares insights into the editorial’s narrative, describing a utopia where pirates and hippies share an era. The images aim to convey a harmonious fusion of classic tailoring and liberating silhouettes, creating a visual story that unfolds in a captivating blend of textures and styles.

The choice of a specific analog camera and lens was deliberate, aiming to achieve a vintage and antique aesthetic reminiscent of a bygone era. Villacorta emphasizes the technical considerations involved in leveraging analog photography to authentically reproduce the desired mood. The analog setup adds a timeless feel, infusing the images with nostalgia and classic charm.

The decision to use a white studio backdrop aligns with the editorial’s function to showcase designer collections for the Hyères International Festival of Fashion. The clean canvas provides a stage for the fusion of pirate and hippie aesthetics, allowing the details of the clothing to take center stage and adding depth to the visual story.

Balancing artistic and technical aspects in post-production involved enhancing the editorial’s concept. Villacorta provides an example of emphasizing the rebellious spirit through strategic adjustments to poses and expressions, reinforcing the overarching narrative and aesthetic. The use of film cameras simplified post-production, achieving the desired vintage-style effortlessly.

Villacorta highlights the collaborative effort between himself and the creative team, characterized by continuous communication and the exchange of ideas. Each team member, including Art Director Marc Sanz Pey, Stylist Jaume Miró, and MUAH Pablo Serna, contributed unique perspectives and aesthetics, fostering artistic freedom and resulting in a diverse range of shots.
