Weeekly: Actively Seeking New Challenges

On May 11, 2020, the K-pop girl group Weeekly (@_weeekly) was announced by IST Entertainment, and just over a month after the reveal, would go on to drop their debut EP, We Are featuring an instantly popular music video for their first single “Tag Me (@Me).” With their cheerful, energetic vocals and a bright, youthful concept – the group’s clever introduction to pop music seized the attention of listeners and peers, setting them up to be perceived as magnetic fourth-generation voices on an evolutionary path.

Within their first year together, the group went on to drop their 2021 smash-hit “After School,” effectively corroborating their initial charming debut magic with evidence of their innate powerhouse nature. After experiencing a surge in popularity after the release of the track, Weeekly’s stature in the industry only continued to expand, with nearly a dozen singles, a handful of coveted awards under their belt, appearances on iconic programs like Queendom Puzzle, and various web series (just to name a few of their expansive resume additions) becoming one of the most hard-working groups of their generation.

By late 2023, the group made their highly-anticipated musical return with the euphoric EP ColoRise, inciting what can only be described as a polished, reinvention of the group we know and adore. Led by the single “VROOM VROOM” (one of our favorite songs of 2023), the six-member lineup began to experiment with their first major exploration of a vibey throwback – but enough of their recognizable, high-caliber pop tone to avoid isolating the already established audience they’ve earned thus far. Still, the group’s sleek, psychedelic b-side “Backwards” might have been the true dark horse track of the heavy-hitting EP, nurturing an instantly enticing experience with all-consuming beats and dreamy vocals that delivers just enough originality to feel remarkably unique in today’s music scene.

Now, to properly ignite the next era of their inspiring career, Weeekly has officially returned with their first English release titled “Stranger,” dispatching a flawless, emotionally-charged acoustic pop pre-cursor to the group’s upcoming single album. And at this point, with each engaging track across their discography showcasing courageous new layers without attempting to chase trends – we’re committed to Weeekly’s vision for the long haul.

Firstly, I have to say that your previous mini-album ColoRise was one of the most memorable releases of 2023 – and “Backwards” in particular is genuine perfection! What was your initial response to seeing such a massive amount of love for ColoRise?

Park Soeun: Our fifth mini-album ColoRise was released after a bit of a long hiatus of a year and seven months, and I’m truly grateful that many people enjoyed it. We sincerely want to express our gratitude to the fans who have shown us so much love.

Lee Jaehee: It was an album that marked our return after a long time, and we felt that the effort we put into it was worthwhile, considering how many people enjoyed it. We were very proud of it.

Monday: During this ColoRise promotion, we had our first light stick, which was really exciting. It was great to meet fans through music broadcasts after a long time, and the support, especially during the “Backwards” promotion with the light sticks, made the experience even more joyful. My initial reaction was that I should strive harder to give back all the support I’ve received.

Last year was a big year for you, which included the infectious digital single “Good Day (Special Daileee),” ColoRise, and unforgettable contributions to Queendom Puzzle. When you look back at all the work you put into 2023, what would you each say that you’re the most proud of?

Jihan: There were many unforgettable memories in 2023. It was a joy to meet Daileee’s in various ways after the COVID-19 period. Queendom Puzzle was my first challenge in a competition program, and I appreciate the support from many people. Thanks to the program, I gained confidence on stage, making it a valuable experience for me.

Lee Soojin: 2023 was truly a year of huge challenges for me. From Queendom Puzzle to the fan song “Good Day (Special Daileee)” for the fans and the long-awaited comeback, there was a sense of pressure. However, I believe that the process of facing these challenges has been a time of significant personal growth for me.

Park Soeun: I learned a lot and grew further in 2023. I feel like I’ve grown the most, especially through Queendom Puzzle, where I collaborated with many artists. I thought that a competition program would be quite challenging, but I’m proud of myself for accomplishing it well.

Zoa: 2023 has been the busiest year of my life! I participated in a competition program, Queendom Puzzle, for the first time in my life and I worked hard every single day to spend my last year as a teenager with no regrets. Despite the busy schedule, I’m truly proud of myself for enduring and giving my best until the end.

Since debuting, you’ve proven to have a very strong discography that has resonated with listeners for nearly four years now. How has your group sound changed, or developed since that whirlwind rookie era?

Monday: Weeekly initially showcased a lively and mood-lifting energy at the time of our debut, I believe we have since grown to become a group that explores a broader range of musical styles not being limited to a specific genre.

Park Soeun: It seems like our team has consistently undergone diverse transformations, presenting various styles such as high-teen, powerful, and easy listening. Moving forward, we will strive to showcase an even more diverse range of colors and adeptly incorporate different styles into our music!

Lee Soojin: During the early debut days, we were a group that utilized various objects with high teen energy to leave a strong impression on the audience, now, we have evolved to convey our unique energy in a different manner, through a more diverse range of genre.

During the early stages of Weeekly’s career, it seemed like the group quickly established its identity because each comeback was utilized as an opportunity to progress artistically. Now that you’ve experienced so much growth in various aspects, what is one thing that each member still wants to strengthen or learn in 2024?

Jihan: In 2024, I want to spend a year focusing more on music. Aside from singing, I have been consistently practicing a musical instrument, and I am working hard to prepare diligently to show our fans a cool performance.

Lee Jaehee: I am putting in a lot of effort to study languages so that I can communicate smoothly with international fans. Please wait a little longer! I will work hard to reciprocate even more of the love from the fans!

Zoa: I want to promote our group Weeekly even more, which is my top priority, and I will work hard to improve my skills. Also, since I entered university this year to major in acting, I am putting effort into studying acting to show fans that I am active in various fields.

If you could manifest anything for your group’s continued journey together, what would the ideal future for Weeekly look like?

Lee Soojin: I would like to do a concert to spend even more enjoyable time with fans, achieve first place on music shows, and become a group that the audience can trust and rely on.

Monday: I hope to leave a lasting impression on the public and have many hit songs like ‘After School’ that will be remembered well.

Park Soeun: I wish to develop as an artist by participating in lyric writing and composing for our albums. I also hope that Weeekly can always be a group that gives their best effort in everything we do.

Lee Jaehee: It would be great if Weeekly could be a group that allows many people to feel and share various emotions such as happiness, inspiration, and comfort through our songs.

Jihan: I hope that when people think of Weeekly, they associate it with a group that brings happy energy, has excellent teamwork, and is a trusted and enjoyable group to listen to.

Zoa: I wish that Weeekly becomes a group that brings hope and positive energy to everyone. I also wish for the group to grow in a way that its actions can have a global impact.

When it comes to Weeekly’s recent pre-release single “Stranger,” what were a few of the primary emotions or feelings that you hoped to evoke from listeners?

Lee Soojin: I hope that listeners feel a sense of warmth through the digital single “Stranger”.

Park Soeun: “Stranger” is a song with a calm melody and hopeful lyrics, creating a comforting atmosphere for listeners. I hope that many people feel warmth and hopeful emotions through our song.

Lee Jaehee: With the serene melody and emotional lyrics, I hope listeners can move forward with hope no matter the challenges.

Your music videos always manage to look fun and effortless, but there’s clearly a lot of work required to get to that point as an artist! Considering “Stranger” was created in a different medium that allowed you to step back, what were your initial thoughts on the video’s concept?

Jihan: The “Stranger” music video was produced in animation for the first time, and it carries the message that Weeekly and Daileee are lights to each other! The sight of the stage in our official color and the touching scenes of Daileees supporting us at the concert are truly heartwarming!

Zoa: This music video is the first time that Weeekly members did not appear and was produced entirely in animation. We watched it for the first time just two days before the release and it was even more sentimental and moving for us, since the song contains the real story of Weeekly.

Monday: It is very exciting to think about meeting international fans for the first time. We hope that many of you have high expectations for the energetic and skillful performances that we have prepared.

Zoa: I am also very very excited about the upcoming U.S. tour that we have been preparing for! The memories of traveling to the U.S. with my family when I was younger are cherished by me, and I want to share these joyful memories with the members and fans. As it’s our first U.S. tour, the members are working hard, studying English together to minimize language barriers. Please look forward to it!

Outside of performing and connecting with fans, are there any activities or experiences you’d like to plan for? Making time for some tourist-like fun is always important!

Jihan: I want to create a lot of happy memories with the members! Recently, our members went on a trip together, and the memories are so good that I think it would be wonderful if we could travel to another place next time. We even discussed going on an overseas trip not too long ago!

Lee Jaehee: I want to go on an overseas trip with the members. We recently went on a trip together in Korea, and it was so much fun that I want to travel abroad to create more delightful memories.

Park Soeun: I’m really looking forward to the time after the performances when we can explore the area, take photos, and enjoy delicious food with the members! We always try to take time off to refresh before and after performances and I hope to have a lot of chances to rest during the US tour as well!
