Through Gilded Age, Viktor&Rolf’s Fall/Winter 2026 Haute Couture collection explores the tension between opulence and restraint. Presented as a theatrical performance, the show reflects on appearances, human fragility and the enduring power of fashion to create worlds beyond the commercial runway.
Viktor Horsting and Rolf Snoeren titled their Fall/Winter 2026 Haute Couture collection Gilded Age, transforming the runway into a performance that explores the tension between austerity and decadence, discipline and opulence. More than a sequence of looks, the show constructs a carefully defined narrative universe in which every element contributes to a coherent and deeply symbolic vision.

The collection is built around two opposing forces. While the silhouettes remain identical, their materiality shifts dramatically: on one side, precious fabrics and gilded embroidery; on the other, raw burlap and austere materials. Through this contrast, Viktor&Rolf examine the relationship between what we choose to reveal and what lies beneath the surface.

The title references the Gilded Age, the period of extraordinary economic expansion in the United States during the late nineteenth century. Popularized by The Gilded Age: A Tale of Today (1873) by Mark Twain, the term ironically described a society whose dazzling prosperity concealed profound social inequalities. Viktor&Rolf draw on the same metaphor to portray a contemporary “Gilded Age,” where wealth and spectacle decorate the surface while vulnerability and contradiction remain hidden underneath.

Within this vision, ornament becomes a form of armor. Embroidery, embellishments, and decorative details protect the body as much as they celebrate it, while raw burlap, traditionally associated with labor and discipline, serves as a counterbalance, bringing the focus back to what is essential. Beneath both layers, however, lies the same fundamental truth: human fragility.

The runway unfolds like a suspended dream. Two women move in perfect synchrony through a bedroom-like setting, transforming the catwalk into an intimate theatrical space where reality and imagination merge into an almost hypnotic choreography.
More than anything else, Gilded Age reminds us that Haute Couture can still exist as an artistic language before it becomes a commercial one. At a time when much of the fashion industry seems driven primarily by financial results and instant visibility, Viktor&Rolf demonstrate that there is still room for radically independent creativity, one capable of building entire universes, expressing ideas, and making the invisible visible.
