Japanese clothing brand Uniqlo has partnered with Shochiku Kabuki, the primary company in performing the Japanese art of Kabuki, for its latest capsule collection which aims to present Japan’s traditional culture in the form of modern pop culture through clothing.
Kabuki is a traditional Japanese form of theater with roots tracing back to the Edo Period (1603-1868). In 2005, Kabuki was added to the list of UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage. For this capsule collection, the Project Ambassador will be Kabuki actor Ichikawa Ennosuke IV.
The collection consists of 15 T-shirts and 16 pairs of steteco (relaxed-fit, wide leg shorts), embodying the traditional costumes worn by Kabuki performers . The collection is available online and in stores around the world.
