Bed J.W. Ford, founded in 2010 by Shinpei Yamagishi, a self-taught Japanese designer, draws inspiration for its clothing collections from words, conversations, and letters. The brand’s loose-fitting silhouettes blend formal wear influences with a relaxed fit, offering a versatile range of well-tailored everyday clothing including blazers, shirts, and trousers. Reflecting on his journey and influences, Yamagishi’s design process involves exploring both the past and the future to create captivating alternatives at BED J.W. FORD.

Yamagishi’s approach to design involves delving into archives and past encounters with designers and brands that have shaped his unique style and aesthetics. While initially indifferent to design retrospectives, he now views this exploration as a dialogue between his past and present self, seeking to create a new kind of elegance for the contemporary era. He continuously refreshes and elevates each piece by infusing modern sensibilities into classic designs, while also questioning if the creations would resonate with him in the future.

The brand’s latest collection ‘after (that) scene’ features a serene color palette and ethereal silhouettes that emphasize comfort and elegance. Embracing diverse body shapes, the designs showcase enveloping arm silhouettes, wide trousers, and flowing coats that move harmoniously with the body. The collection presents a sense of satisfaction and familiarity to the wearer, emphasizing a comfortable yet stylish fit that transcends conventional fashion norms. With a visual aesthetic characterized by contrasting elements like cut-out details, crash details, casual check patterns, and vibrant colors, the collection exudes a nonchalant attitude while maintaining a high level of sophistication. This blend of past influences and contemporary design concepts results in a wardrobe that signifies a harmonious coexistence between nostalgia and modernity.

As Yamagishi continues to draw from his memories, experiences, and emotional states, he envisions a future that embraces encounters with new individuals while creating pieces that resonate with people’s closets on a deeper level. Ultimately, each design in the collection serves as a testament to personal growth and a celebration of future connections yet to be made. Read the exclusive interview with Shinpei Yamagishi for Vanity Teen:

How would you describe your childhood in a few words and how it had an impact on your journey as a fashion designer?

I spent my boyhood in the countryside with a complex about admiring city and fashion people.

Can you tell us more about your design process and how you translate words, conversations, and letters into your collections? How do these elements inspire and shape your designs?

Finding key words was very important before starting the collection. To stay on the right track while developing the ideas, conversations are necessary and I believe these are the backbones of design. Once the frame is completed, it will lead to the discovery of colors and details, it is also clear to see what are the things that need to be taken off at the same time. So rather than saying to get inspiration, it is more like to clarify each part.

You have previously exhibited indifference towards design retrospective but now see it as a moment of looking into the future while engaging in a conversation about the past with another self. How has this shift in perspective influenced your work and the direction of your brand?

Last year, since July, it was a great honor that we received so many interview requests. While talking with the editors, I felt that it’s more like having a conversation with myself in the past “Hey, long time no see!” The man in the past was more honest and straightforward than the person I am now. Although he could be greedy, there were no lies or any vanities. The purity of desires and admiration. Spending time talking with him, I’m now making a collection with a sense of “yes, this is good for me” without hesitating. At the same time, I feel like the brand is regaining the correct sense of admiration. I believe it’s evidence that what I want to achieve, the vision of the brand has become purer and clearer.

Could you share some examples of influential people that have had a profound impact on you and your aesthetic? How do these past encounters inform and influence your style?

Encountering their sense of beauty instilled in me a strong desire and determination to dedicate my life to clothing. Even now, my closet at home holds many of their creations, and every time I wear them, it fills me with happiness.

Their creations embody a sense of timelessness and practicality, yet they also exude a modern aesthetic that resonates with contemporary sensibilities. I appreciate how my taste in clothing doesn’t necessarily align with my taste in furniture; it feels like a reflection of my individuality, which I find quite pleasing.

The design process is described as “digging up and reliving old wounds.” Can you explain this metaphor further and how it contributes to the depth and meaning behind your collections?

Confronting imperfect things I’ve created in the past, or things that now seem lacking in refinement, still evokes feelings of fear and a sense of embarrassment from that time. If I were to sum up those emotions, it would simply be “embarrassing.” However, I feel that confronting them requires both time and energy. In the lack of refinement from the past, I can see purity, and in the imperfections, I can see the ideals I held for craftsmanship at that time. Gathering those experiences and ideals, I’ve been putting my heart into each piece, striving to find the best possible way to bring them as close as possible to the ideals I held at that time. This season, I believe I’m chasing after the idealized aspirations that have been conveniently embellished in my memory, and in doing so, I see myself reflected in the pursuit.

Your brand is known for its versatile lineup of well-tailored but relaxed fit everyday clothing. Can you discuss your approach to achieving this balance between formalwear-inspired designs and loose-fitting silhouettes?

There’s nothing particularly special about this approach. I’m grateful that the staff are very skilled at wearing clothes and come to work every day in unique outfits. It’s possible that the daily interactions during that time serve as significant inspiration. However, personally, I don’t believe in creating distinct boundaries between formal and casual attire, and I hold the same values dear in my work. And I also witness situations akin to contemporary elegance emerging unexpectedly. It seems that carefully observing and cherishing the moments in everyday life has become one of my crucial starting points for each season.

Your aspiration is to embody “another kind of elegance for our time.” Can you elaborate on what this means to you and how you infuse this vision into each collection?

I think it’s a grand theme. Even in our Japanese language, the meaning of elegance is ambiguous, and I believe it’s more about demeanor and behavior rather than just material possessions. However, there’s a strong desire to express this ideal as a worldview. At least personally, I’ve absorbed this influence from the designers I mentioned earlier. Starting from the draping of the fabric and creating shapes that have a sense of spaciousness and airiness, yet maintain a refined expression, it doesn’t resonate with me if it comes across as cheap. However, there are indeed garments that evoke associations from the posture of the wearer, and I constantly strive to create such pieces throughout the collection. This serves as the foundation for everything, from the runway to the looks, stores, and printed materials. It’s the most important rule we must adhere to in various places. Everything we do in our pursuit of “another form of modern elegance” embodies what is characteristic of BED jw FORD. By doing so, perhaps we can find the answer to “another form of modern elegance” in the future.

Can you discuss the importance of comfort and a good fit for the body in your designs? How do you prioritize these aspects and what techniques or elements do you incorporate to ensure a comfortable and flattering experience for the wearer?

The pursuit of comfort in clothing is crucial. Naturally, I also pay the minimum necessary attention to reducing stress as much as possible. However, in my belief, whenever there is design involved, stress is bound to arise. For instance, in modern times, it’s not particularly difficult to create lightweight garments that don’t cause much stress when worn. But personally, I love the heavy, dense feel of traditional woolen clothing, which evokes a sense of nostalgia for me. And so, I consider patterns that accentuate these qualities and devise fabrics that become more familiar and comfortable over time. While it may not always be convenient, taking the time and effort to cherish these aspects is where time and technique are truly invested.

How do you maintain the brand’s distinctive codes from collection to collection? What are some key design elements or signatures that continue to resonate with your brand identity?

One is the shirt fabric that I continue to produce year-round. It resonates strongly with the aesthetic I envision, regardless of changing seasons or themes. It’s an essential element both as everyday wear and in shaping the collection. The other is a single jacket with an open collar similar to an open-collar. The jacket outline remains unchanged, but I vary the silhouette of the pants seasonally. While the silhouette of the pants is important, the concept isn’t confined to suits or sets; rather, I want people to wear it with a sense of freedom and creativity.

Your collections often feature contrasting elements and details such as cut-outs, crash details, and vibrant colors. Can you talk about the significance and intention behind these choices? How do they contribute to the overall aesthetic and storytelling of the collection?

I don’t perceive vibrant colors and contrasts like clashes or cutouts; I see them all as ordinary elements right in front of me. I believe elegance can reside even in torn pants. The important thing is to make whatever we do truly reflect who we are. Even if we create a collection with vibrant colors and refined designs, if they don’t truly represent us, then they lose their meaning, despite being elegant. The crucial realization is understanding that “this too is elegant,” don’t you think?

A letter to your future self.

I still believe that my mind is filled with things I want to do. I’ll continue to enjoy creating clothes that, when I look back, I’ll be eager to embrace. Let’s keep having fun with it!
