“I live in the Netherlands myself,” says the photographer “Many of my relatives and acquaintances go on vacation to Tenerife. I always hear stories and see pictures of all-inclusive hotels and major tourist cities. When I saw pictures online of the island I was so impressed that I could not imagine that locals lived on the island in this way. That’s why I looked for a typical old Canarian house. I found this family home, in the middle of the island away from tourism, which has been in the family for generations.”
“The old furnishings and the way the house is designed is typically Canarian. To complete it, I was looking for a model that would match the atmosphere. I found
Ryan, who was born in Tenerife himself. His parents migrated there from England. He is a kid from tourism but is now a local. I love this contrast between the old Canarian house and a boy from a new Canarian generation. The way in which old and new stories arise and tourists and locals meet each other really appealed to me.”
