My Own private Idaho – Gus Van Sant, 1991

A decadent world and a poetic language match up in “My Own Private Idaho”, the adolescent odyssey by Gus Van Sant.

As usual, “My Own Private Idaho” (1991) supposed quite an odyssey for Gus Van Sant before he could see his project on screen, yet also as usual the support of both the actors – in this case River Phoenix and Keanu Reeves – and the critics supposed a lesson against the rejection Hollywood is used to give to the quintessential indie director.

Precisely this film is simultaneously about an odyssey, that of Mike Waters (River Phoenix) in search of his mother. Mike is a street boy who suffers from narcolepsy and that, like many others, prostitutes on the streets of Portland to get some money. It is in this environment where he meets Scott Favor (Keanu Reeves), another young man he falls in love with and with whom he embarks on a journey to Idaho and later on to Italy in search of his loss mother, a journey in which he only finds unsatisfactory answers and frustration. The film is actually and emotional odyssey in which Mike grumbles the lack of unconditional love of her lost mother, while a reflection on love, sex and power emerges from the characters and situations that Mike and Scott find on their journey. The two young men face their frustrations and desires trying to understand who they are and who they want to become, following a set path that will eventually separate them.

The poetic language used in the movie contrasts the context and the street and decadence world of the story, pure style Van Sant. It is full os symbolism and eccentric pseudo-fantasy characters who, though not always comprehensible, are quite clear about their intentions, revealing the deepest desires and emotions of human kind. With “My Own Private Idaho” Gus Van Sant takes us into the world he manages better, the mental and emotional afflictions of adolescents.

It is not a conventional and easy film as those that contemporary audiences are, perhaps, too used to. Its structure, its style and its plot require a little patience and attention, but its poetry and cinematographic riches. “My Own Private Idaho” is a film that appeals to the natural desires and passions of men, and therefore it is a constant cinematographic reference.

Un mundo de decadencia contra un lenguaje poético se enfrentan en “Mi Idaho Privado”, la odisea adolescente de Gus Van Sant.

Como casi siempre, “Mi Idaho Privado” (“My Own Private Idaho”, 1991) supuso una odisea para Gus Van Sant hasta ver su proyecto sobre la pantalla, y sin embargo y también como casi siempre, el apoyo tanto de los actores – en este caso River Phoenix y Keanu Reeves – como de la crítica, fueron toda una lección contra el rechace que Hollywood está habituado a dar al director indie por excelencia.

Precisamente dicho film trata al mismo tiempo sobre una odisea, aquella de Mike Waters (River Phoenix) en busca de su madre. Mike es un muchacho callejero que sufre de narcolepsia y que, como muchos otros, se prostituye en las calles de Portland para conseguir algo de dinero. Es en este ambiente donde conoce a Scott Favor (Keanu Reeves), otro joven de quien se enamora y con quién se embarca en un viaje hacia Idaho y más adelante Italia en busca de su madre, un viaje en el que sólo encuentra respuestas insatisfactorias y frustración. La película es en realidad una odisea sentimental en la que Mike se lamenta por la falta del amor incondicional de su madre perdida, al tiempo que una reflexión sobre el amor, el sexo y el poder se desprende de los personajes y situaciones que encuentran Mike y Scott en su viaje. Los dos jóvenes se enfrentan a sus frustraciones y deseos tratando de entender quiénes son y quiénes quieren llegar a ser, siguiendo un camino conjunto que acabará por separarles.

El lenguaje poético utilizado en la película contrasta con el contexto y mundo callejero y decadente de la historia, puro estilo Van Sant. Es un film repleto de simbolismo y de personajes seudo-fantásticos y extravagantes que, aunque no siempre comprensibles, son bastante claros en sus intenciones, poniendo de manifiesto los deseos y sentimientos más profundos del hombre. Con “Mi Idaho Privado” Gus Van Sant nos sumerge en el mundo que mejor maneja, el de las aflicciones mentales y sentimentales de la adolescencia.

No es un film convencional y fácil como aquellos a los que el público actual está, quizás, demasiado acostumbrado. Su estructura, su estilo y su argumento requieren un poco de paciencia y atención, pero es imprescindible verla por su riqueza poética y cinematográfica. “Mi Idaho Privado” es un film que apela a los deseos y pasiones más naturales del hombre, y por lo tanto es un referente cinematográfico constante.
