At the Met Gala 2026, the meaning of fashion influence is shifting. The red carpet is no longer defined only by traditional celebrities, but increasingly by athletes who are redefining what it means to be fashion icons.

Paige Bueckers, one of the most influential young basketball players and a rising WNBA figure with over 3 million followers, made her debut in a custom Coach suit and Bijules jewelry, marking a defining moment in the intersection of sports and luxury fashion.

Dressing the Creative Process

Her three-piece tuxedo by Coach reinterpreted 1940s tailoring through a 1970s lens, combining structure with fluidity. Hand-applied paints recreate the spontaneous gestures of an artist at work—smudges, dabs, and splatters layered intentionally across the fabric. These marks are not decorative; they are placed where an artist might instinctively wipe their hands and to give a different interpretation of this year’s Met Gala theme “Fashion is Art”. Embroidered beads, paillettes, and crystals amplify the texture, mimicking the gloss of wet paint. A personal detail anchors the look: a purple embroidered number five on the sleeve, referencing Bueckers’ jersey with the Dallas Wings.

Accessories extend the narrative. She wears ’70s-inspired block heel loafers and carries a painted Tabby 20 bag, while Bijules’ jewelry introduces a sculptural, tactile dimension—bridging art, body, and material expression. A personal detail: the number five —a nod to her longtime jersey number, which she continues to wear for the Dallas Wings, connecting her identity as an athlete to her fashion presence, bridging performance and visual storytelling.

The collaboration with Bueckers evolves naturally as Coach Creative Director Stuart Vevers explains, or Vevers, the concept begins with process rather than image.

“I thought about the theme through the idea of making — especially making in New York, which feels very true to Coach. Fashion and art share that same instinct. It’s about the work behind the work: the craft, the process, the people who shape it. With Paige, it was instinctive from the beginning. It was collaborative throughout, and that gave us the confidence to keep it real — to make something honest, personal, and completely her.”

Why Athletes Are Fashion’s New Cultural Icons

Athletes are becoming fashion icons because they bring authenticity, credibility, and real community engagement. Their influence is not constructed—it is earned through performance, discipline, and visibility.

The tunnel walk culture in the NBA and NFL has transformed pre-game entrances into global fashion moments, where athletes showcase personal style and influence millions.

Through platforms like Instagram and TikTok, athletes connect directly with audiences, shaping trends in real time and building highly engaged communities.

Luxury brands such as Louis Vuitton, Gucci, and Prada increasingly collaborate with athletes, recognizing their cultural impact and ability to merge luxury fashion with street style.  Brands are no longer seeking visibility alone—they are seeking relevance. Figures like Naomi Osaka and Lewis Hamiltonhave already demonstrated how sport can intersect with fashion, identity, and culture—expanding the role of the ambassador into something multidimensional.

Style plays a crucial role in this shift. Athletes move fluidly between luxury and streetwear, combining high fashion with personal expression. The result is a language that feels both aspirational and real.

Paige Bueckers at the Met Gala 2026 represents a new model of influence—one based on trust, identity, and cultural relevance. Athletes are no longer entering fashion as guests; they are actively shaping its future. “This is my first time at the Met Gala, and it’s such an honor to be invited, especially to be here with Stuart and the incredible team at Coach,” Bueckers said. “They’ve been amazing collaborators and I’ve enjoyed the opportunity to celebrate the process with my look; the artists, the team, and the courage it takes to bring a vision to life.” Her words reflect a shift in values—from spectacle to collaboration, from image to meaning.
