The Knicks Keep Winning On and Off the Court: is this 2026 trend really unstoppable?

After conquering the NBA, the New York Knicks have scored another unexpected win. Their iconic cap has topped Lyst’s ranking of the year’s most wanted products and it seems to be the trend, proving that emotional value can sometimes outweigh exclusivity and price.

We might have seen it coming, and yet Lyst’s ranking of the year’s most-searched-for product still managed to surprise us. We are used to seeing bags, shoes, and accessories from major fashion houses at the top of these lists, expensive, exclusive objects turned into status symbols. This time, however, the number one spot belongs to something far more accessible: the New York Knicks cap, an accessory with a relatively modest price tag, but enormous symbolic value, it is a trend to buy official merch items instead of pricey limited edition collabs?

After all, Knicks merch was practically everywhere this year. In the first season under head coach Mike Brown, the team won its first NBA title since 1973, turning the victory into a collective moment for all of New York, and then the rest of the world. The joy felt by thousands of fans quickly translated into a desire to represent the team and feel part of its triumph. Jerseys, jackets and, above all, caps became a simple and immediate way to show that sense of belonging.

Courtside on June 14, the day of the triumph, celebrities also helped turn Knicks merchandise into a wider cultural phenomenon. Taylor Swift, Kylie Jenner and Sydney Sweeney all wore Knicks gear, while nearby Timothée Chalamet sported a bold orange Knicks jacket, paired with Chrome Hearts pieces in orange and blue to match the team’s colors perfectly. New York City mayor Zohran Mamdani showed his support too, wearing a Knicks jersey under his suit during the ticker-tape parade.

But the cap’s success did not come out of nowhere. Its history brings together two elements deeply rooted in American culture: basketball and the baseball cap. Founded in 1946, at the dawn of the NBA, the Knicks have built an exceptionally strong visual identity over the decades. Their blue and orange color palette and distinctive logo have become instantly recognizable symbols not only of basketball, but of New York itself.

The cap’s silhouette makes the story even more interesting. Despite representing a basketball team, it borrows the shape of the classic American baseball cap. New Era played a fundamental role in its evolution, helping transform the fitted cap from a piece of sporting apparel into a streetwear essential. From the 1980s onwards, these caps gradually moved beyond the stands and playing fields and into everyday wardrobes, becoming an integral part of urban culture.

The Knicks cap eventually stopped being simply a piece of NBA merchandise. Wearing one today does not necessarily mean being a fan: its logo, colors, and immediate association with New York have turned it into a kind of cultural souvenir of the city, equally at home alongside sportswear, denim, tailoring, and even luxury fashion.

The victory amplified a phenomenon that was already there. According to Lyst data, searches for New Era Knicks caps have risen by more than 4,000% since March, transforming an accessory originally made for fans into one of the most coveted fashion items of the moment.

And perhaps it is precisely its price that makes this achievement so significant. In a ranking usually dominated by luxury products, the Knicks cap turns the traditional rules of desire on their head: it proves that an object does not have to be rare or expensive to become iconic. Its value comes not from its price, but from what it represents.

Wearing it means symbolically taking part in a collective moment, carrying a piece of the victory with you and declaring an allegiance to a team, a city, or simply the world it represents. And it is precisely this accessibility that makes the cap even more powerful: thousands of people can wear the same symbol and see themselves as part of the same story.

The Knicks cap therefore tells a quintessentially New York story: it starts with sport, moves through street culture and arrives in fashion. More importantly, it says something about the way we construct desire today. At a time when luxury and exclusivity seem to go hand in hand, one of the year’s most coveted objects reminds us that sometimes emotional value can matter far more than the number on the price tag.
