Before stepping behind the decks, Allison Fullin was already working closely with music, just from a different perspective. As a fashion stylist and creative consultant, she helped shape the visual identities of artists such as Marracash and Ariete, while collaborating with prominent figures from the sports world, including Paulo Dybala.

Born and raised near Venice, with Italian and Cuban roots, Fullin has always been drawn to the intersection of street culture, fashion, and music. Today, under her musical alias Toques de Allison, she is exploring a different form of storytelling, replacing clothes and images with rhythms, sounds, and unexpected musical connections.

But this is not exactly a career change. For Allison, creativity has never belonged to a single discipline. It is an ongoing exploration, one that can move naturally from fashion to music without losing its identity.

We caught up with her to talk about the moment that inspired her to pursue DJing, the artists who influence her sound, and why the most exciting part of her musical journey is still ahead.

You built your career as a stylist. What inspired you to step behind the decks?

I don’t really see it as a transition, but rather as a natural evolution of my creative journey. Music has always been part of my life. As a child, I studied piano and took dance classes. At school, I was the one playing CDs during breaks, and later, at art school, I would spend my painting classes listening to music and watching videos on YouTube. Eventually, I built a career in fashion, working as a stylist alongside musicians, artists, and athletes. But at some point, I felt the desire to experience music firsthand, rather than just contributing to the image of those creating it. A few years ago, during a meeting in Los Angeles with a musician and producer, I told him that in my next life, I would love to be a musician. He looked at me and simply asked, “Why not in this one?” That question stayed with me. It gave me the courage to pursue something I had secretly wanted for a long time.

When did DJing become more than just a passion?

I think I’ve always known how important music was to me, but for a long time, I never considered turning that passion into a professional path. After that encounter in Los Angeles, I decided to enroll in an intensive DJing and electronic music program at Plastic Academia in Barcelona, which I completed in July 2025. Later, in New York, I found the courage to perform at a venue. That experience was an important turning point. I realized I could finally give space to a part of myself that, until then, I had mostly experienced as a listener. Music became another way to express myself, but also an incredible opportunity to connect with others.

Where do you feel most at home behind the decks: at a party, in a club, or somewhere unexpected?

I have a soft spot for listening bars, rooftops, and places where music accompanies a particular moment of the day. My favorite time is golden hour, especially around sunset. I’m fascinated by that moment when people leave their daily responsibilities behind, begin to unwind, and prepare for the evening. I love the idea that my musical selection can help shape that atmosphere. Of course, I also love clubs, where the connection with the crowd becomes more direct and the energy is completely different. But if I could choose one experience above all, it would be playing at a block party in New York. I love the idea of music taking over the streets, bringing together people of different ages, backgrounds, and cultures. The streets have always been one of my greatest sources of inspiration, even during my career in fashion. There’s something beautiful about seeing a public space spontaneously become a place of connection and shared experiences.

How would you describe the Allison Fullin’s musical identity?

My musical exploration is deeply rooted in Black music and its endless evolution. I love moving between genres: deep house, soulful house, Afro house, jazz fusion, nu jazz, neo soul, alternative hip-hop, and more organic or experimental electronic sounds. I’m particularly drawn to cultural crossovers, percussive rhythms, and productions that preserve a human, emotional, and spiritual dimension. I don’t feel the need to identify with one particular genre. What interests me is finding a common thread between sounds that might initially seem unrelated. For me, DJing is about creating an atmosphere and taking people on a journey, whether it’s an intimate listening experience or a dance floor.

Which musicians and DJs have influenced you the most, and why?

There are so many, but if I had to choose a few, I would say Joe Claussell, Jeff Mills, Ron Trent, and Theo Parrish. Joe Claussell inspires me through his profound connection between music and spirituality. His sets have an almost ritualistic dimension, where rhythm, emotion, and musical exploration become a single experience. Jeff Mills fascinates me for the way he approaches technology as a creative instrument. Watching him perform feels almost like witnessing music being constructed in real time. There’s something incredibly futuristic about his vision. Ron Trent has an extraordinary ability to blend house, jazz, soul, and spiritual influences into a musical language that feels both profound and timeless. I’m particularly drawn to the emotional sensitivity of his productions. Theo Parrish inspires me with his instinctive, unconventional approach to DJing. I love how he leaves room for unpredictability and imperfection, allowing the energy of the moment to guide his sets.

They’re four very different artists, but they share the ability to create distinctive musical universes without being confined by genres or expectations. That creative freedom is what inspires me most.

How do you build your playlists and DJ sets?

I’m constantly collecting music. Through traveling, meeting people, songs someone dedicates to me, personal memories, and, of course, digging online. Over the years, I’ve built a very personal musical archive that continues to grow with me. When I prepare a set, I usually start by imagining a story. I look for connections between tracks, considering their musical keys, rhythm, energy, and the way one sound can naturally lead into another. What I love most is that every playlist tells a story that, deep down, only I know. The listener is free to interpret it through their own memories, emotions, and experiences. I find it fascinating that exactly the same sequence of tracks can evoke completely different feelings in different people.

What has been your favorite DJ set so far?

The next one I’m preparing! I’m very ambitious and demanding of myself. Every time I finish a set, I’m already thinking about what I could improve, experiment with, or explore further. I’ve had some beautiful experiences, from Barcelona to New York, as well as the sets I’ve recorded in Venice, a city I feel deeply connected to. Each one has taught me something different. But I like to believe that my best set is still ahead of me. That’s what keeps me curious and motivated to challenge myself.

What are you currently working on?

I’m developing Drift Groove Sessions, an international audiovisual project exploring the relationship between music, places, and cultural identity. I’m interested in creating experiences where music interacts with architecture, imagery, people, and the history of a location. At the same time, I’m starting to explore the possibility of producing my own music. I’d love to draw inspiration from my personal archive of Cuban music (that I translated into my alter-ego Toques de Allison instead of using my name Allison Fullin), which represents an important part of my roots, and combine it with the many influences I’ve collected over the years. I don’t know exactly where this exploration will lead, and that’s precisely what excites me. I want to leave room for experimentation and unexpected connections.

What is the soundtrack to your days and nights?

Probably one of my jazz playlists, which I’d actually love to share soon. Jazz is something I listen to at almost any hour. During the day, it helps me focus and find creative energy. At night, it brings me into a more intimate, relaxed state of mind. I find jazz deeply romantic, artistic, and experimental. I especially love experiencing it live, because improvisation can create extraordinary musical conversations, even between musicians who have never played together before. Jazz also brings back childhood memories of going out to restaurants with my family, when music became part of those special moments we shared. It’s a musical language that requires openness and curiosity. There’s always something new to discover.

Where do you see yourself a year from now?

I hope to be developing increasingly international projects, continuing to grow musically, and expanding my artistic exploration. Music will certainly remain central to everything I do, but I don’t imagine my career being limited to a single discipline. I’d like it to become the common thread connecting art, fashion, design, travel, and different cultures. I’m interested in creating worlds where different creative languages can meet, influence one another, and generate new experiences. Projects that can evoke emotions, bring back memories, and stimulate people’s imagination. I’d love to collaborate with creatives from around the world, continue experimenting, and move beyond traditional definitions of artistic professions. I believe creativity becomes most interesting when we stop putting boundaries around it.
