What was the spark that led you to found DIMA LADINA, and how has your vision evolved since then?
Fascinated by silk, DIMA LADINA was founded as sort of an experimental design lab centered around the exploration of this material’s unique versatility while challenging how it is traditionally perceived in a contemporary menswear wardrobe. Since then, while silk remains a fetish focus for the brand, the vision has evolved beyond pure experimentation. It is now more preoccupied with building the wardrobe our audience expects while developing a personal fashion discourse.
Silk is at the heart of your work — how do you redefine its role in the contemporary wardrobe?
Besides its unique material qualities, silk has had a special place in world culture throughout history. Its fascinating properties make it simultaneously a functional and formal material which is very contemporary. Most people associate silk with specific applications such as satin or a given aesthetic, such as evening wear or haute couture. So from my perspective experimenting with applications not usually associated with this material such as knitwear or functional outerwear was a way to refresh its perception in the contemporary wardrobe.
Your FW26 collection experiments with waterproofing and coating traditionally delicate silks. What inspired this boundary-pushing approach?
I wanted to challenge the perception that silk is a delicate material. In this process, I approached a historical Italian silk weaver usually associated with and specialized in silk fabrics traditionally used in haute couture. During this process we developed unique textures not really associated with silk which simultaneously possessed something very uncanny.
Paris is a city steeped in fashion heritage. How does its energy shape your creative process?
I wanted to start the brand in Paris as it was the perfect city for the concept I had in mind. Silk has always been a heritage fabric used by couture houses. Simultaneously Paris has enabled new ideas and concepts to emerge and its energy and creative scene provide the right environment to nurture our practice.
Collaboration seems central to your practice. How do your French ateliers and partners influence the final pieces?
We have built close collaborative relationships with our ateliers and partners. We are deeply committed to producing our pieces locally across a number of French ateliers and in this process their eagerness to test our ideas and provide their own has deeply influenced the way we work and they are as important to the creation process as we are.
If your garments could speak, what story would they tell about our relationship with material and time?
They would probably teach us a spiritual tale – our desire for beauty and the material, our sense of lack throughout our lives comes from a deep feeling of separation that permeates human nature. Our compulsive need for objects and experiences since early age is only an attempt to fill the gap of this original separation.
A letter to your future self: what advice or challenge would you leave for Dimitri five years from now?
Stay true to yourself no matter the circumstances and love the beauty around you.
How do you balance historical awareness and traditional techniques with audacious innovation in your designs?
We like to start with archetypes research and based on that create a story that is in line with our design philosophy and process. Overall we like to experiment and push designs to the edge of common wearability without ever making them unwearable for an average person. This aspect and exercise is very important to us.
Looking ahead, what does the ideal DIMA LADINA wardrobe feel like — both emotionally and physically — for the person wearing it?
The DIMA LADINA wardrobe reflects the contemporary zeitgeist while being rooted in historical awareness. On an emotional level, we strive to make products that are more than the sum of their parts and carry a deeper meaning for the person wearing them.
