“E quannu t’ancontru ‘nda strata
Mi veni ‘na scossa ‘ndo cori
Ccu tuttu ca fora si mori
Na’ mori stranizza d’amuri
L’amuri”
It is pretty difficult to translate the text written in Sicilian dialect of the masterpiece by our maestro Franco Battiato contained in the album L’era del cinghiale bianco (1979), Stranizza d’amuri.
It is a maestoso and sad hymn to love.
It is feeling death to celebrate life.
It is poetically and terribly current.
In 2023, Stranizza d’amuri (Fireworks) also becomes the title of a delicate film directed by Beppe Fiorello which tells the dramatic story of the Giarre murder and of the two victims Giorgio Agatino Giammona and Antonio Galatola who are a symbol of the fight against homophobia and LGBTQ+ rights today.
It is a story of extraordinary courage and (social) defeat.
It is a story of posthumous victory.
It is a simple love story.
Gabriele Pizzurro plays Nino, one of the tragic protagonists.
He is one of the ziti as the two young men were despisingly called by the local community.
Gabriele Pizzurro is also the protagonist of today’s interview.
Born and raised in Rome, 20 years old, Gabriele made his debut on the big screen with Stranizza d’amuri premiered in Berlin at Nastri D’Argento.
At the beginning of this year he returned to cinemas with an ensemble film entitled 10 giorni con i suoi (When Mom Is Away… With the In-laws) by Alessandro Genovesi in which he plays Antonio – an Apulian boy characterically opposite to his previous Sicilian role.
Gabriele is among the revelations of the Italian cinema scene.
Gabriele thinks about the future which is life.

What’s the best thing about your hometown/country?
I think Italy has wonderful landscapes and enviable cuisine.
I’ve been discovering Tuscany a lot lately and I love exploring remote villages, medieval towns, lakes, and wineries.
What’s the best thing about you?
It’s very difficult to answer this question.
I always say to be wary of people who think they know a lot about themselves.
All in all, I think I’m a pleasant and fun person, and I can deduce this from the laughter I make my friends do.
How did you discover you passion for acting?
I must say that I have been very lucky because my father is the director of a theater in Rome and I have always experienced the theater as a second home, consequently I grew up on the stage, it was not a real discovery, it is what I have always done and what I love to do every day.
There was a specific day when I realized that I wanted to do this for the rest of my life: I was a child (about 6 years old) and I performed in Orvieto with the musical about Mary Poppins.
For the first time I saw a completely full theater and I thought I wanted to experience that feeling for life.
What was your first experience as an actor?
Like I said before, Mary Poppins, at the age of six.
What were you doing before acting?
I’ve always acted in the theatre with my father, I’d be a hypocrite to say that I studied, I acted and that’s it.
What does art represent for you?
Art is the only way to combat the monotony of life.
Cinema or TV?
Having never done television I would answer cinema, certainly as a spectator I love arthouse cinema definitely more but I don’t deny that I would like to play the role of a character for longer as happens in TV series for example.
If I say Stranizza d’Amuri?
Who is Nino?
Nino is a young Sicilian boy with a very present and affectionate family, a house surrounded by greenery.
In the summer of 1982, Nino lives a beautiful love story with Gianni, his peer, but, as often happens, love generates hate that can even lead to death.
I tried to bring many things of myself into my character, including delicacy and kindness.
And if I say 10 giorni con i suoi?
Who is Antonio?
Antonio from 10 giorni con i suoi is a young boy who lives with his family in a farmhouse in Puglia, during the course of the film he will have to deal with the parents of his girlfriend Camilla who he loves and with whom he would like to move to Lecce for university.
He will find himself at the center of misunderstandings and suppositions which will give rise some family dynamics.
What are you listening to at the moment?
At this moment i’m listening to a lot of Michael Jackson, every year takes me a moment in which I become obsessed with him and try to imitate his movements and sing his songs.
Favorite movie/TV Show:
My favorite films are mainly four:
— Roma by Alfonso Cuaron
– La Haine by Mathieu Kassovitz
– Edward Scissorhands by Tim Burton
– Hugo by Martin Scorsese
Favorite designer, fragrance or beauty product:
I don’t have a favorite perfume, I’m a fan of fragrances and products by Chanel.
Currently, you’re obsessed with/about:
I’m always and forever obsessed with Elvis Presley.
Place you would love to visit:
I’m a fan of Japan so I’d say go back there even if I already went with my dad when I was 8 years old.
Last but not least, if you were an animal, which one would you be?
If I could choose, I would like to be a chameleon to adapt to every situation and to different contexts.
