After exploring several diverse avenues of the music industry, K-Pop sensation Hangyeom of OMEGA X has officially jumped into the immersive world of acting with his debut role in the Korean drama Jazz for Two.
Conceptually, the series, (based on the popular BL web novel) unravels the tale of self-discovery and growth amidst the backdrop of Wooyeon Arts School, where various high school students navigate the realms of love and music. Stepping into the shoes of Suh Do-yoon, a vibrant drum player harboring a concealed crush, Hangyeom’s on-screen portrayal meticulously unfolds through a series of poignant narratives, breathing life into Suh Do-yoon’s vivacious persona, while still contributing depth to the fabric of this timeless storyline.

But when you come from a group committed to the pursuit of passion and maintaining authenticity along the way — there’s plenty of opportunities to transcend boundaries and leave an indelible mark on pop culture. Which is precisely what the singer-turned-actor has accomplished in this challenging new chapter of his career.
Now, Hangyeom is offering us some exclusive insights into his transformative journey in our new Vanity Teen digital cover story.
What attracted you to the character of Suh Do-yoon and compelled you to take on this specific role in Jazz for Two?
Hangyeom: Hello, this is Song Hangyeom, and I played the role of Suh Do-yoon in Jazz for Two. Do-yoon seemed like a very charming character with a bright and optimistic personality, and I was drawn to sharing joy and hopeful energy with viewers through that character.

Can you share with us how you prepared for your role in Jazz for Two, considering this is your grand acting debut?
Hangyeom: In real life, I’m much older than Do-yoon in the drama. Therefore, I looked back on who I was and how I acted when I was in school. Do-yoon’s character has multiple colors such as a uniquely positive vibe, whimsical side, and seriousness, so I tried my best to keep up with a variety of tension levels.
Given its inclination to focus on self-discovery and growth through love and music, what themes of Jazz for Two resonated with you on a personal level?
Hangyeom: All characters are eager for any challenge because they’re passionate about music, and that was something I could relate to the most. I now am inclined to search for new sides by looking back at myself, and Do-yoon from Jazz for Two because he also grows up by learning more about himself. I saw such characteristics similar to who I am today.

What would you say are some of the primary similarities and biggest differences between your real-life personality and that of your character?
Hangyeom: I found the biggest similarity between the real-life me and Do-yoon in the scene where Jun-kyu rejected joining the ensemble and Do-yoon tried his best to make it work. Both I and Do-yoon are the type of people who give their all to achieve their goals. The difference would be that I cannot hide my growing feelings, which Do-yoon is capable of doing. I tend to express my feelings very openly, and that is why I always express my love to our fans [Laughs].

Your character’s story resonates with a lot of people due to themes that promote the pursuit of artistic passion and inclusivity. What was your initial reaction to the series’ positive reception and this particular narrative?
Hangyeom: I am just grateful to know many people think that way. It feels amazing that a lot of viewers resonate with and show love for the message that I wanted to portray through Jazz for Two. [Laughs] Given with opportunity, I would like to say thank you once again to all the fans around the world who support and love Jazz for Two and the four main characters of the drama!
You’ve crafted a lot of music with OMEGA X — but getting work on songs for a project you’re starring in makes this feel even uniquely personal! What was your favorite part about working on the song, and how does the track reflect the story?
Hangyeom: It was a very special work for me! I imagined and wrote songs that fit well with various scenes of the drama by reading the script. Also, “NEW LIGHT” is my first solo track ever, and it felt great to feature my solo song in the drama I appear on. Through “NEW LIGHT,” I wanted to express the trembling emotion of pure love from four characters.

Going from music to acting, what challenges did you face while transitioning into this highly favored BL Drama, and how did you overcome them?
Hangyeom: I always thought that performing on stage is a part of acting too, so I took a rather friendly approach to debuting as an actor. One challenge that I faced was the awkwardness in my nuance, inflection, and pronunciation when speaking my lines, so I practiced diligently to improve.
Conversely, what aspects of your industry experience helped you embark on this journey as an actor?
Hangyeom: I believe my attitude toward challenges and determination have gotten stronger through my musical career, which also seemed to help my beginning as an actor.

Looking ahead, how do you ideally envision balancing your activities with OMEGA X and future acting projects, considering the success of Jazz for Two? Are you still hoping to enjoy both avenues of creativity?
Hangyeom: If given any opportunity, I am up for it. It can be difficult to try a brand-new field, but a new challenge provides a chance to find a new side of me and to grow even further by overcoming an obstacle. I encourage everyone to keep challenging oneself with passion, just like I do!
In closing, what’s been the best part about getting to play this exciting new role?
Hangyeom: I loved feeling like going back to my school days. I personally was going through a tough time when we were shooting the drama, but Do-yoon’s optimistic and bright characteristics provided me with a lot of energy when I was playing the role. I still remember everything from the shoot; its great atmosphere, the director and staff, the scent of the filming location, and the weather. I wish to keep these vivid memories for a long time ahead.
Lastly, special thanks to Vanity Teen readers who read my interview. Please look forward to my various activities in the future!
