A responsibility that I don’t take for granted

VT: Previously, you have talked about how it was for you to push yourself to pursue a career in music. But, could you tell us more about how it was being a young guy in a small town in which people could frown if young guys say they want to be a musician?

JM: I guess it’s just not in the cards in people’s minds if you’re from a place that isn’t remotely entertainment-driven. It was a pipe dream for me and very unlikely that you could actually make something of yourself, much less do it with an American team.

In my mind, there was no backup plan even when I worked a normal job; it was only to support my future dreams of being an artist.

You had to create your own doors to walk through, frowned upon or not. I needed to make it happen.

VT: Despite your journey in TV singing competitions, social media have been honestly relevant for your career since those platforms have given you bigger audiences. Therefore, thinking about the highs and lows of social media, how do you express gratitude to those who show you love no matter what?

JM: Honestly, it’s crazy that these social media apps bring in such large audiences, but I’m really grateful they exist! It’s become a powerful way to connect during the pandemic, to help escape, grow, learn and connect with the fans.

The power of an engaged fan base is an awesome feeling but also a responsibility that I don’t take for granted.

VT: You are such an emotional person, so how was it like seeing great artists like Kelly Clarkson, P!nk, or Sam Smith showing support and celebrating your singing skills?

JM: Haha, I am a very emotional person!

These are the artists I’ve looked up to since I was a kid. I’ve watched every award show performance and speech they’ve given; it’s just an honor to be recognized and supported by these musical icons.

VT: Now, please, let us talk about your new music. I Lost Myself in Loving You is finally out, and the reception has been great. At some point before releasing it, were you afraid of opening up your heart that way?

VT: Now, please, let us talk about your new music. I Lost Myself in Loving You is finally out, and the reception has been great. At some point before releasing it, were you afraid of opening up your heart that way?

JM: Absolutely! I think it’s so vulnerable and revealing to release something so close to your heart.

I was scared because it’s the most personal I’ve ever gotten in a song! But I guess that’s what shines through. Nowadays, people can tell if you’re being fake.

I wanted to share an honest piece of my heart and how I’ve been feeling over the last couple of years.

VT: Have I Lost Myself in Loving You and the love of your fans helped you heal your emotional scars so far?

JM: I think healing takes time in all aspects, but the love and support from the fans have been so incredible and overwhelming. I’m so thankful to have such a supportive system between my friends, family, and fans.

Some days are hard, but I’ve tried to channel those emotions and thoughts into new lyrics that may end up as future songs.

VT: How would you describe the experience of being part of the OST of Snowdrop with your single Wishes?

JM: I was honored when they asked me to sing an original soundtrack on Snowdrop!

Learning about K-pop culture has been incredibly inspiring. They’ve welcomed me with open arms, and I hope to return the favor when I am able to visit all my fans and perform throughout Asia.

Hitting the road for the first time

VT: A tour is coming; what can you share with us about it?

JM: Yes! I’m hitting the road for the first time, and I couldn’t be more excited about it. It’s just so crazy that I’ve had to wait this long to perform but to finally be able to get in front of people and fans; it’s so, so exciting!

VT: Which other plans do you have for the future?

JM: I’ve got one more single that’s coming next, and then I’m releasing an EP this summer, and my debut album is coming shortly after.

I’m going to keep releasing original music that I’ve been writing and recording over the last year. The new music tells my story and shares different parts of me; and will, hopefully, inspire and connect with many people out there.

VT: Given that music has been the predilected way you choose to express emotions, what message would you like to convey to those who might be struggling to show their feelings and open up about how they feel?

JM: The more honest you are with yourself and others, the more likely things will eventually heal. As my mum always says: “a problem shared is a problem halved.”

I think for me, being so connected to my emotions it’s taught me a lot: the good, bad, ugly, and sad.

I’d say to my fans: “You got this!”

VT: Anything else you would like to share with Vanity Teen?

JM: Thanks so much for having me! Keep an eye out for my next release and upcoming tour and live shows. I’m so excited for the future! The best is yet to come!
