Multifaceted artist: I have always found this meaning referring to a specific actor, writer, painter, dancer interesting.

Versatility is a complex concept in its meaning, it is a universe to be explored, an unknown and constantly evolving dimension.

When I meet Emma Valenti I’m overwhelmed by her multifaceted energy (precisely) and finally I manage to make sense of this mysterious word.

Twenty-seven years old, Italian from Turin, with a contagious smile: Emma tiptoes (literally) into the artistic environment by enrolling at the age of four in classical dance courses at the Teatro Nuovo.

When she grows up she choose to be an actress and move to Rome to attend Centro Sperimentale academy. Popularity comes with the RAI television series Don Matteo in 2022 and Che Dio ci aiuti in 2023. Taking a leap into the present, the series Nudes 2 where she plays the female protagonist will be released in September on Netflix and in November she is on Mediasetscreens with Le onde del passato.

In her future? With joking but firm intention, she hopes to win an Oscar.

Hi Emma!

What does acting mean to you?

Life. Living lives different from mine. The ability to be whoever I decide to be. Being able to enter someone’s life, put myself in the shoes of a certain character, decide how they move, how they speak, how they behave. Living a thousand lives in one. It’s the best “job” in the world.

Your journey at the Centro Sperimentale in Rome has certainly enriched your artistic education. How has the academy’s pragmatic/pedagogical approach influenced your vision of acting and your growth as an actress?

Before entering Centro Sperimentale I was totally unaware of how this world worked; yes, when I decided that this was the path I wanted to take I took some acting courses up in Turin with very good teachers, but then I decided that I had to move to Rome and only there, once I entered the Experimental Center, I started really to understand what this meant. The academy allowed me to grow both on an artistic and personal level, allowing me then, with the skills obtained, to win the first audition as a protagonist and carefully tiptoe into the world of work.

Popularity comes with the participation in two much-loved RAI series: Don Matteo in 2019 and Che Dio ci aiuti in 2023.

What did these two moments represent for your career? What is your relationship with fame?

Popularity is a big term. I don’t think I have achieved any level of fame but certainly these two major projects have allowed me to slowly enter the world of work, make myself known and have certainly enriched, as I said before, my wealth of experience. I really owe a lot to these two series in which I was also lucky enough to meet people who have become family.  In Don Matteo in particular, which was my first, I felt a bit like a fish out of water, I hadn’t finished training yet and I wasn’t sure I was ready for such a big project. But as soon as I arrived I immediately felt welcomed, protected; Maurizio Lastrico and Mariachiara Giannetta took me by the hand and accompanied me on this first journey and I really learned a lot. I will be forever grateful.

What elements of your artistic background did you bring to the two characters you brought to the small screen, and what challenges did you face in making them authentic and engaging for audiences?

As mentioned before, I was lucky enough to have real masters at my side on set, like Nino Frassica, from whom I learned a lot; every day was an acting lesson. And everything I learned I put into the character. The great challenge so far has been to interpret characters very similar to me but at the same time very different in small ways and this has allowed me to dig deeper, to look inside and outside of myself and look for things that didn’t belong to me in the first place.

Acting yes, but also dancing: how and when was this passion born?

The passion for dance began immediately. My mom always tells me that I started dancing first and then walking. I started when I was about 4 years old at the Teatro Nuovo in Turin. And that’s where I spent the next 15 years of my life. It is there that I put on my first ballet shoes, I did my first shows in front of large audiences, I made my first friendships that still last today; it really was my life for a long time. It made me happy, free, I was good and I was aware of it (sorry for my modesty hahaha).

Then I had an accident while skiing and broke my cruciate and from there the difficulties began which slowly led me to stop. I didn’t take it very well at first, but then this “dark” moment led me to understand what I really wanted to do in life, and so I moved to Rome, started studying acting, and a new life began.

But dance will always be part of me.

Rigor and freedom are the two elements that to a certain extent link and contrast dance and acting. How does this duality characterize your personality and how has it influenced your artistic path?

Discipline, rigor, creativity, technical precision, physical strength, emotional expression, are all characteristics that I have learned over time thanks to dance and that I still carry with me even on sets.

I believe that having a classical dance basis is fundamental in life because it promotes elegance, correct posture, awareness of our own’s body, which has really helped me on stage and in front of the camera.

They are two disciplines that go hand in hand, one enriches the other and vice versa.

Projects in the pipeline?

I’m filming a Mediaset series Le onde del passato which will be broadcast on Canale 5 from November 15th.

And before that Nudes 2 series will be released  in September.

I plays the female protagonist. I really care a lot about this project; is a series that talks about revenge porn, a very important, delicate and still unknown topic to many. For those who don’t know, revenge porn is a phenomenon in which a person spreads intimate images or videos of another person without their consent, often as an act of revenge or to damage their reputation. It is a serious violation of privacy and can cause devastating emotional harm to victims. It is essential to fight this form of online abuse primarily through information and awareness. Mutual trust and respect are key to building healthy, respectful relationships, both online and offline.

Looking ahead to your career, what projects inspire you and what kind of roles or challenges would you like to take on to continue growing as an actress?

Being still at the beginning of my career, everything inspires me right now. I wish I could do it all because I find there is room for growth in every large or small project I take on.

A little quietly, I say that one of my dreams is to make an action movie (like Tomb Raider). I’m fascinated by all the physical preparation that goes into these films.

I consider myself a very athletic person and I think I’m suited for a film where I have to run, jump, fight, drive motorbikes and cars.

On the other hand, I would also like to get out of my comfort zone and do something that is totally distant from me, which scares me even at the beginning, like a theater tour for example.

It’s something that fascinates me a lot but I’m terrified of it.

Your years of working in the world of acting have brought you to face various challenges and opportunities. How do you feel you have grown both artistically and personally over the course of your career so far, and what have been the most significant moments that have shaped you as an artist?

As I have already mentioned, there are no real specific moments that helped me grow and form as an artist. I have learned that everything around me, what I experience every day is a lesson.

On the other hand, for me the artist is the one who manages to capture the essence of life through his own creativity, his own sensitivity. The one who, through his emotions, knows how to inspire, make people reflect and excite in turn.

I think my biggest growth so far has been starting to see the world with different eyes; the beauty of this profession also lies here: learning to grasp the beauty in the most “banal” things, surprising ourselves and internalizing everything that surrounds us.

Reflecting on your career path and experiences to date, how do you believe your passion for acting and your determination to pursue your goals have influenced your development as an individual and as an artist?

Actually, my path as an actress and person develops precisely in the moments in which I lack that determination, that passion, those moments of difficulty. When I feel stuck and would like to leave everything but I also feel that I could do and give more, that’s where I allow myself to improve and grow.

A letter to your future self.

Dear Emma,
I hope you are living a life full of satisfaction, joy, love. Be always kind to yourself and others and cultivate your dreams with determination. Face every challenge with courage and remember that every obstacle is just an opportunity to grow. Never stop learning and looking for beauty in the little things because the world, despite everything, is a beautiful place. Be grateful for every experience, good or bad, because it has brought you this far and will make you even stronger. Keep dreaming and believing in yourself, the best is yet to come.
With love,
Emma
Ps. Did we win the Oscar?
