We have recently heard news about writers and actors going on strike to demand better working conditions in a market that has seen the fast rise of technologies such as streaming media and artificial intelligence in recent years.

The surge of these new technologies in recent years has put many actors, writers, other creatives, and technical workers in the entertainment industry at a disadvantage as their work has not been fairly compensated in a dignified and transparent manner as many of the rules currently in place around television and film production are outdated and predate the rise of new technologies like streaming media.

Despite the pre-existing unfavorable conditions for workers in these industries, we are now witnessing a rapid surge of AI that could put those jobs more at risk. Before embracing these emerging technologies we must ensure fairness for those employed in the entertainment industry and guarantee wages for them that allow them to have a dignified livelihood, financial stability, and fair profits from their labor.

We hope that members of both the Writers Guild of America (WAG) and the Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) are able to reach a fair agreement with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) that will help them obtain better wages, a fair and transparent use of actors’ likeness through AI, an adequate compensation for residuals they obtain from streaming services, and in general an overall improvement of their working conditions.

We’re aware that actors and writers aren’t the only professionals in Hollywood facing such challenges. VFX artists and other workers whose jobs are more technical have also faced major constraints in their working conditions and they’re not currently represented by a labor organization. Due to the current circumstances many of them are already facing more uncertainty and even unemployment.

We hope that a fair agreement between workers and studios could serve as precedent and example to provide protections and safeguards to workers across different fields whose jobs face risks due to the unprecedented fast evolution of technology.

This is not a matter of preventing the adoption of new technologies. It would be hypocritical of us to claim that we have not benefited from technological progress. However, it is necessary to find a compromise in the entertainment industry that can first ensure safe working conditions and then guarantee safeguards around the use of new technologies.

For this upcoming edition of our magazine, we had prepared an issue featuring editorials from artists from all around the world and an exclusive cover featuring actor Hunter Doohan, recently known for his role as Tyler Galpin in the show ‘Wednesday’.

In support of workers’ demands for better working conditions and in accordance with WAG SAG-AFTRA’s request to not promote any AMPTP-associated work on social media, we have decided to temporarily halt the production and release of our upcoming Vanity Teen Spring/Summer 2023 issue until further notice.

All workers deserve fair wages and safe working conditions.
