TWISTED TOGETHER: DREE HEMINGWAY, NICK DELLI SANTI AND THE NEW SHAPE OF INTIMACY BY JW ANDERSON

What happens when two people stop dressing alike and start moving as one? In JW ANDERSON’s new Twisted Denim campaign, Dree Hemingway and Nick Delli Santi turn intimacy into a silhouette—where love, denim and design become deliberately impossible to separate.

A pair of jeans should not know this much about two people.

Not because denim is traditionally associated with romance. Quite the opposite. Jeans are democratic, habitual, almost anonymous. They are what we put on when we stop thinking about what we are wearing. They age with us, remember our bodies, collect places we have been and eventually become a kind of second skin.

Jonathan Anderson has never been particularly interested in second skins.

He prefers to distort them.

For JW ANDERSON’s Twisted Denim campaign, Dree Hemingway and her partner, Nick Delli Santi, appear together for the first time, photographed not simply as two people in love, but as two bodies occupying the same visual language. The result is intimate without becoming sentimental, playful without becoming performative. Their relationship is there, but so is something stranger: a conversation between two silhouettes.

The campaign asks a deceptively simple question:

What does intimacy look like when it becomes a design principle?

The answer is twisted.

Literally.

The signature JW ANDERSON denim takes the familiar architecture of the jean and turns it slightly against itself. The front of the garment twists; the seams follow; the leg becomes subtly displaced. Nothing is dramatically destroyed. Everything is simply moved enough to make the familiar unfamiliar.

It is a small act of rebellion against symmetry.

And perhaps that is exactly where intimacy begins.

Because being close to someone is not about becoming identical. It is about learning how to exist slightly out of alignment with another person and somehow making that displacement feel natural.

Dree and Nick embody that idea instinctively. Their chemistry does not require theatrical gestures. It lives in proximity, in attitude, in the casual choreography of two people who already know where the other person is going to be.

They look like a couple.

But they also look like a collaboration.

That distinction matters.

For JW ANDERSON, clothing has always existed somewhere between object and idea. A garment can be beautiful, but it can also question the assumptions that made it beautiful in the first place. Twisted Denim takes one of fashion’s most familiar objects – the five-pocket jean – and quietly asks it to behave differently.

The result is recognisable enough to feel effortless and strange enough to feel new.

Made in Japan from quality Japanese cotton and crafted by expert denim makers, the collection carries its own evidence of construction: the printed Made in Japan pocket bag, the oversized leather JW ANDERSON patch, metal shank buttons and orange binding. These details are not decorative footnotes. They are reminders that the distortion is deliberate.

The twist is engineered.

But it still feels human.

And that is what makes the campaign particularly compelling.

Dree Hemingway brings a particular kind of cool that cannot be manufactured: relaxed, slightly elusive, never over-explained. Nick Delli Santi meets her somewhere in that same frequency. Together, they create an image of intimacy that feels contemporary precisely because it refuses to announce itself.

There is no need for the obvious vocabulary of romance.

No hearts.

No clichés.

No visual declaration of look how much we love each other.

Instead, there are two people sharing clothes, space, rhythm and attitude.

Perhaps this is what intimacy looks like now: not matching, but connecting.

Not wearing the same thing, but understanding the same thing.

Not becoming one person, but allowing two different bodies to create a third image between them.

JW ANDERSON’s unisex approach makes that idea even more pronounced. The denim does not belong to him or her. It belongs somewhere in between. The garment becomes a space where conventional distinctions – masculine and feminine, individual and couple, classic and experimental – can loosen.

The jeans twist.

The categories twist with them.

And suddenly denim becomes less about the body it covers than the relationship it creates with the body wearing it.

This is where Jonathan Anderson’s particular language becomes unmistakable. His design is rarely about making something simply different. It is about taking something we think we already understand and introducing one unexpected disturbance.

A sleeve where there shouldn’t be one.

A proportion that feels almost wrong.

A familiar object behaving strangely.

A jean that refuses to stand straight.

That tiny disruption is enough.

Because fashion does not always need to scream to change the way we look.

Sometimes it only needs to move the seam.

Dree and Nick make that movement feel effortless. Their first campaign together becomes less a portrait of a couple than a portrait of connection itself: messy, instinctive, playful and slightly imperfect.

Which, conveniently, is also what makes good denim good.

It gets worn.

It gets lived in.

It changes shape.

It remembers.

Maybe the real luxury of Twisted Denim is therefore not the craftsmanship, the Japanese cotton or even the unmistakable JW ANDERSON signature.

Maybe it is the permission to stop standing perfectly straight.

To be slightly off.

To be close without being identical.

To twist, and find that someone is twisting with you.
