Tommy Hilfiger x FRGMT: Before Streetwear Became Luxury

Tommy Hilfiger and Hiroshi Fujiwara are going back to the ’90s, but thankfully, this isn’t another nostalgia exercise built around slapping an old logo onto a new T-shirt.

The new Tommy Hilfiger x FRGMT capsule revisits the preppy-meets-streetwear era that helped shape Tommy’s identity, with Fujiwara giving the classics a few well-placed tweaks. Released on October 15, the collection is available through Tommy Hilfiger’s online store, with prices ranging from $89.95 to $1,199, depending on the piece.

The biggest change? The flag is light blue now. And honestly, I might prefer it over the original red. It’s fresher, a little less in-your-face, and makes the whole thing feel more modern without losing what makes Tommy, well, Tommy.

THE LOGO GOT A GLOW-UP

The capsule sticks to familiar territory: denim-panelled outerwear, rugby shirts, varsity styles, field jackets and tailored trousers. Nothing feels impossible to wear, but it’s not boring either. The windbreaker is an easy standout, while the polka-dot jacket adds just enough playfulness. The tailored trousers are another strong piece, especially if your wardrobe needs something beyond the usual jeans-and-hoodie rotation.

There’s also a nice balance between pieces that make the outfit and ones that simply make everything else look better. The denim-panelled jacket does the heavy lifting, while the trousers can work with pretty much anything. The polka dots stop the collection from taking itself too seriously, and the colour palette keeps everything easy to mix. Tommy Hilfiger x FRGMT is the kind of capsule where you could pick one statement piece and build the rest of your wardrobe around it, rather than feeling like you have to buy into the entire look.

The campaign helps sell the mood, too. Those night-flash shots and grainy, old-film textures feel natural rather than painfully staged. Add a New York street backdrop and you’ve got a visual language that rarely misses. It feels like someone actually went outside with a camera instead of spending three months building a fake world around the clothes.

VINTAGE LOOK, BRAND-NEW PRICE

My favourite detail in Tommy Hilfiger x FRGMT might be the deliberately worn-in finish on some of the pieces. The fabric looks wrinkled, faded and slightly beaten up, like something you found in a very good vintage store after digging through a dozen questionable jackets. Except this time, you’re paying full-price Tommy Hilfiger rather than getting lucky at the thrift.

It’s a funny contradiction, but it also makes the pieces feel more individual. And while you might find an old Tommy flag in a vintage shop, you’re less likely to find it in Fujiwara’s new light blue.

The ’90s influence is more than just styling nostalgia, too. Fujiwara has spoken about seeing hip-hop artists adopt Tommy Hilfiger in their own way after he discovered New York’s scene. The collection returns to that crossover between American prep and street culture, keeping the familiar shapes while shifting a few details.

It’s not trying to reinvent the wardrobe, and it doesn’t need to. These are the kind of statement pieces that can actually earn their place in a capsule collection: easy to throw on, distinctive enough to lift an otherwise basic outfit, and not so loud that you’ll be sick of them in three weeks.

It’s also refreshing about a collaboration that doesn’t rely on completely unwearable showpieces to get attention. The pieces feel designed for actual rotation, whether that’s throwing the windbreaker over a hoodie or pairing the tailored trousers with a simple tee. The light-blue flag does enough to make them recognisable, without turning every outfit into a walking billboard.

The light-blue flag might be the smallest change here, but it’s the one I keep coming back to. Sometimes a good collaboration doesn’t need to change everything. It just needs to get the colour right.
