Disturbing, his character in Circeo by Andrea Molaiol is disturbing.

Guglielmo Poggi is the protagonist of an event series that tells the true story of the brutal crime and violence against Rosaria Lopez and Donatella Colasanti and where he plays Angelo Izzo, one of the young executioners (broadcast on Rai1 last November).

Circeo is the first Italian drama on Paramount+ Italia. For this project Guglielmo made an important physical transformation and a profound psychological reflection because of the character he played.

However, the actor was already known to the general public thanks to films such as Il nostro ultimo by Ludovico Di MartinoL’estate addosso by Gabriele Muccino and Bentornato Presidente! by Giancarlo Fontana and Giuseppe G. Stasi for which he received a nomination at Nastro d’Argento as best main character, the youngest in the history of the Award.

Born in 1991, Guglielmo graduated from Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia in Rome and has a great passion: music.

Among the founders of the band L’Orchestraccia he confessed us that he still has a secret dream: to become a rock star.

Hi Guglielmo, how are you? In your opinion what is art today and do you think the approach to and the perception of art have changed over the years?

Hi to you all!

In my mind and in my heart, art is the same mysterious material as forty-five thousand years ago in the Leang Tedongnge cave: an urgent necessity. And if there is an approach that needs to be recovered, it is that of strenuously seeking the necessity in making art.

What characteristics must an actor possess to be “effective” in 2024 and which one do you think you have?

Today, I don’t deeply understand what is “effective” because language and taste are changing rapidly; I believe that the ability to amaze those who look at us, taking them to a place of absolute truth even in total fiction, is still what brings a spectator to a theater or cinema. I fight for this every day.

What if you hadn’t been an actor?

A politic, I think. And a rock star, that was my dream and will remain the great regret of my life.

Popularity came thanks to the series produced by RAI, Circeo where you starred, among others, alongside Greta Scarano and Ambrosia Caldarelli. How did you come to play the role of Angelo Rizzo and what did that experience represent for you?

I insisted a lot on playing a role that I had always imagined for myself. At the very first, they didn’t want to audition me for Angelo Izzo role, but I convinced them.

It remains the most complex experience of my career.

Why was the series so successful and why did the role you played meet the public expectations?

I think it helped to win the Nastro D’Argento as best docufiction, and Rai1 is a “package” that allows you to reach a large audience.

However, I deeply believe the series should be shown again and again, because it is essential that we never stop talking about the topic of feminicide even from a historiographical perspective.

In this sense, my character is so strong in the collective imagination also because he – Angelo Izzo – is still alive, and because he’s still speaking publicly.

How challenging was it to play such a disturbing role?

As I was saying, it was the most difficult role of my career.

At certain moments I thought I couldn’t make it.

You feel the weight of responsibility and expectations: you can’t go wrong with certain roles.

It’s almost a political duty, it must be done for the victims. And so, in addition to losing weight and the psychological difficulty that such an interpretation puts you in, there was also the fear of not succeeding.

Reading comments from audience live on Twitter who took it out on me as if I were Izzo for real repaid me for all the effort I put in the project.

We also know that the passion for acting derives from the passion for the theater. For many, theater is the purest form of acting, the primordial core. What does it represent for you and which work or play do you feel most connected to?

I have been doing cinema and television all my life.

I love this media that I strongly tried to better know also from a different prospective: behind the camera. And yet the great love of an actor  can only be the theater in life.

It’s there that magic, that wonder I spoke to you about before, is expressed in purity, without alibis and without filter.

And those who manage to carve out the opportunity to also work in the theaters give themselves an authentic comparison with themselves. Whether you recite CamusShakespeareVon Kleistor contemporary dramas (which are often unfairly underestimated) it’s something unique always.

You are currently on tour with the theater show directed by Umberto Marino which addresses another delicate topic, that of disability.

I’m the home assistant of a charismatic disabled lawyer, masterfully played by Alessandro Fontana. Umberto’s greatness lies precisely in tackling the topic without discount and without any shadow of pietism. As always, looking pain in the face helps you to understand it and come to terms with it, and irony makes the epiphany sweeter and more powerful.

You also have a big passion for music. Can you tell is something more about L’Orchestraccia?

The Orchestraccia is the project that Marco Conidi has been carrying out for years with courage and determination together with actors of the caliber of LeoPesceCaputoAngeletti and a large number of fantastic musicians.

I was able to perform in front of thousands of people in various editions of Primo Maggio, and in true temples of music such as the Auditorium and some of the most important Italian theatres.

For me, who has always dedicated time and study to pure art (as I like to define it), it is an honor and an enormous pleasure to be part of it.

More, TV, theater, music… or cinema in your future?

I’m waiting for news about a debut very dear to me, that of Pierfrancesco Poggi and Stefano RibaldiGocce d’Acqua

Gocce d’Acqua is a film that I feel is mine not only as a co-star but because I brought it together with the help of great friends and fantastic professionals. Fausto CabraDavide MancaGiulia Bevilacqua are just some of the names of artists and technicians of the highest level who wanted to lend their wisdom to a crazy and independent project.

When I talked about necessity I was also referring to this. And it’s nice to discover that many still believe it.

If you should give some advice to your yesterday’s self and to your future self what would it be?

It’s the same one I give myself every day, because I still haven’t learned: “forward without fear”. The Western imperative to remove pain has created pure concentrates of fear: US.

I would like to defeat it and look at the challenges of the future with courage and a bit of fatalism.

In this uncertain and warmongering world I consider it a poetic attitude. And we desperately need poetry.

Thanks a lot!
