Broadway has always been a beacon for theatrical brilliance, and its latest offering, “Back to the Future: The Musical,” is no exception. At the forefront of this adaptation of the beloved film franchise is Casey Likes, a young and talented actor taking on the iconic role of Marty McFly. This article delves into Likes’ journey to the Broadway stage and offers a sneak peek into his experiences through an exclusive interview.

Adapting a film as cherished as “Back to the Future” for the stage is no small feat. This musical reincarnation captures the heart and spirit of the original movie while injecting new life into its timeless story. The magic of time travel, the complexity of human relationships, and the excitement of adventure are all magnified in this Broadway rendition, making it a must-see for fans and newcomers alike.

Casey Likes’ entry into acting was almost predestined, with his mother, Stephanie Likes, being a seasoned Broadway actress herself. His early exposure to the performing arts led him to embrace acting not just as a profession but as a calling. His journey to the role of Marty McFly is a testament to his dedication and talent, marking him as one of Broadway’s most promising stars.

To understand more about Casey and his world, Vanity Teen had the opportunity to have an exclusive interview, and this is how it went:

When and how did you first discover your love for acting and, by
extension, musical theater?

My Mom, Stephanie Likes, who is an actress as well kind of slightly
pitched the idea of acting to me, as she did with many things when I
was young including guitar, piano, drums, and even tae kwon do. I did
my first commercial for “Goodwill” at 3 years old with the help of a
local agency in Arizona, and I was expected to deliver a story about
toys in front of me, a task my mom even thought I might be too shy for.
On the first take I delivered my entire performance straight to camera
and I talked for minutes.

I understand your Mother was also a Broadway actress who appeared in Les Miserables (as the double cover of Eponine and Cosette). What
impact did having a parent who was a professional actress have on
you growing up and did it influence your decision to become an actor
yourself?

It is an un surmountable privilege to have a parent that supports and
understands what you want to do. It is rare to find and I am very
thankful for it. Due to this I was able to still struggle with the trials and
tribulations of the industry, but I didn’t have to worry about explaining
it to mom. She inspired me a lot, and still does.

Personally speaking, what is your favorite Broadway musical and why
do you love it?

Ironically enough it is Les Miserables, it just is the perfect show and I’ve
been lucky enough to play both Gavroche and Jean Val Jean in
youth productions.

For those readers who haven’t seen or been exposed to a lot of musical theater and Broadway, why would you encourage someone to go out
and see a Broadway show?

Broadway shows are a singular experience. Seeing stories being told Live
and in front of you in sometimes unbelievable ways is a singular
experience. The fact that you’re crying or laughing or jaw dropped at
something that’s happening in the moment in front of you is a very
human and strong emotional experience.

⁃ Are there any musical theater roles you are are dying to play in the
future?

So many. I personally have had a career so far of roles I didn’t know existed
so I’d love more of that please, but also there are shows I want to
personally develop based on other media/people that exists already, and
hey it would be cool to eventually come full circle and play Jean Val Jean
again some day.

⁃ You broke into the world of Broadway very quickly with your role as William Miller in Almost Famous, based on the acclaimed Cameron Crowe Movie of the same name. What is one special memory you have of performing in your first Broadway Musical, Almost Famous? Do you recall your first time performing for a Broadway audience?

When I walked out on stage for the first time it was an extremely strong
existential experience. I could barely get out my first line without
wanting to cry and throw up from the amount of feelings happening in
my head. It’s not just a dream come true, but it’s been basically my
entire purpose since I was born, so to accomplish one of those huge
“milestones” was absolutely overwhelming. Especially with that
family of a cast, that special show, and the added sentimentality of
doing this for Cameron and his family.

⁃ You’re now playing the title role of Marty McFly in Back to the Future on
Broadway, that’s so exciting! There are so many people who are massive fans of the film franchise. What was your relationship like with the film prior to being in the Broadway show adaptation?

My mom always compared me to Michael J Fox growing up, and along with watching the movie a multitude of times, I definitely had an
appreciation for what is not only a perfect film but what is also a huge
culture in itself. It is really cool seeing those people who are a part of
that culture at the stage door every night.

⁃ What was it like for you to meet the legendary original cast members of Back to the Future such as Michael J. Fox and Christopher Lloyd, did
Michael J. Fox have any words of wisdom for you in taking on the iconic
role of Marty McFly?

It was surreal, not only as an actor and a massive fan, but as a fan of his
work in the medical industry and being an actor who has stood up for
health in a very public way. These are things that are extremely important to me, so meeting him, I don’t know if I even got all the words out I truly needed to express to him. However as he walked away I asked him his
advice before I went on stage for out Opening Gala Night performance, he
said “kick ass. If you put your mind to it you can accomplish anything”
which is a quote from the movie.

⁃ What are some fan-favorite moments from Back to the Future the film
that are replicated on stage?

Nearly every moment you love from the first film is recreated here live in
front of your face. Including the car.

⁃ How did you personally prepare for the role of Marty McFly?

I hesitate to say this, but I tried the “marty voice” and physicality in the
bathroom 5 minutes before my audition. It was deep within me, whether it
be from the years watching Michael J Fox’s mastery as a kid, or just
something cosmic, but the majority of my work on marty was not on the
character itself, that already lived deep in my bones, I truly worked on the
stamina and physical and vocal requirements of what I believe is one of the
more challenging male roles that has been created in a while. I am singing
at the top of my range, running, fighting, and much more 8 times a week.
The prep was in the gym and with my vocal coach for months.

As a Broadway actor who has to perform a high intensity show like Back to the Future 8 times every week, what is your daily routine like so
that you can deliver a great performance for every audience? Do you
have any unique pre-show rituals?

My day consists of eating a lot, and eating a lot that fuels my energy. Each
week I attend physical therapy so I can keep my body in shape to do this
role. Prior to the show I do physical warm ups that prepare my body for
each intense movement I do in the show, this includes lifting myself onto 6
foot locker units, and jumping off high platforms and landing without
hurting my knees.

Outside of your work as an actor, do you have any other major
passion and interests?

Almost as long as I have been an actor I have been a filmmaker. When
I was just starting out at 3 years old, I used actors who were in
projects with me to star in my films. To this day I still do the same
thing. I have been lucky enough to recently do my own vlog
series called the “mcfly files” on youtube for Broadway.com
which has been wonderfully creative, and when I’m done I will
continue to develop projects for film, tv, and theater for and with
my friends as I have done for nearly 19 years.

There is obviously a big theme of “The Future” and time travel in Back
to the Future. As for your future, Casey, if you could hop into a Time Machine and see the future of your career, what are some things
you’re hoping to achieve? What do you hope Future Casey is up to?

I’m a firm believer that you can only hope for what your destiny could be,
but once you speak it out loud it will change. I am open to many
different paths, and as a lover of so many different avenues as a
creative and producer, I am very much looking forward to whatever
the world throws at me. More of all of it please! Bring it on.
