Joland Novaj by Julia Sariy

New York-based freelance fashion and portrait photographer from Ukraine Julia Sariy @julia_sariy presents this fashion editorial exclusively created for Vanity Teen online with the model Joland Novaj @jolandnovaj represented by New York Models @newyorkmodels.

The model himself was an inspiration for this editorial as the photographer herself commented. “We wanted to explore different sides of his personality and emotions.” Julia Sariy wanted to capture the transition between late summer and early fall in fashion styling, with dreamy, fun, thoughtful, and elegant vibes. The main idea was to tell the story of Joland’s state of mind during this time. “We wanted to mix different styles and see how the outfit would translate into specific emotion or movement of the model.”

The equipment used for this shoot used was a film camera Mamiya 645 with a 80mm lens and a Kodak Portra 400 and 800. This story was shot in Conservatory Garden, a formal garden near the northeastern corner of Central Park in Upper Manhattan, New York City with a quiet, calm atmosphere.

“It’s the first editorial I shot using only a film camera, not backing it up with any digital one,” says the photographer. “This way of shooting allowed me to be focused on the moment and connect with the model. In my photography style I pursue capturing candid emotions and free movement working together with a model and trying to open his/her personality and creativity.”
