Jackson Wang ”Alone”: A Personal & Emotional Note on Making His-Story

Jackson Wang (I.G. @jacksonwang852g7/) released his latest music video ‘‘Alone’‘ on January 30. The teasers shown days prior to its release foreshadowed that it would be something very personal. ”Alone”, you could say, is an introspection of the artist on the journey he has traveled throughout his life to make history: HIS STORY.

The video is set in a desolated and ruined area (alluding to the past) with Jackson sitting on a bed, with a fencing mask beside him, in a room of an apartment next to a dining room with only three chairs. As he is about to leave, he gives one last view to the apartment before moving on. While leaving the building, the artist comes across different elements and objects that reminisce parts of his past and present life, such as the building with the Olympics logo that could allude to its early life when he was part of the Hong Kong national fencing team, or the TEAM WANG signs as the artist has embarked on the fashion scene by launching and establishing his streetwear line TEAM WANG, showing the artist’s diverse goals. Across the video, the idol’s face shows slight wounds that could point to the significant experiences he has faced along his life.

As it was known a few weeks ago, on January 19 GOT7 ended his relationship with JYP Entertainment by not renewing his contract with the label, allowing us to see the beginning of a new facet of the artist, a phase where the artist enjoys greater freedom to express what he really thinks and feels.

Characteristic of the artist, the video ends with a personal reflection on what it takes to pursue your own dream:

No one can help us walk the road we’re taking. While we may get lost and feel lonely along the way, we cannot give up halfway through. Especially when there is one thing that we love, it will drive us to keep going. The journey will be tumultuous because nothing in this world is easy, but our love for that one thing we’re are chasing is bigger than anything else. We get used to all of the hardship, pain, and suffering, even the resentment, that comes with it.

Coming from an artist who is part of one of the most competitive and demanding industries in the world, the message conveyed speaks to the reality of every person’s life: life is a road that we must travel alone. Be it facing the common hardships that come with it, pursuing a dream that in truth won’t be shared, supported, or understood at all by our family and friends. Making sacrifices by choosing one goal over another, the social stability to be reached as taught by social standards vs the unknown, unpredictable and ever changing path of pursuing a personal dream.

As for the reception of the MV, the highly positive and emotional reaction of his fans was not to be expected, praising both the song and thanking him for the hope given to his fans to pursue their own dreams.
