What if the real question at Hermès is no longer how to protect its codes, but how to open them?

A zipper is a strange thing to make the protagonist of Hermès.

It is mechanical, industrial, almost vulgar in its directness. It opens. It closes. It separates. It exposes. It conceals. And yet, for Spring/Summer 2027, Nadège Vanhée makes it feel almost philosophical.

The zipper runs through skirts, leather blousons and trousers, changing proportions with a pull. A slit appears, disappears, moves. The garment stops behaving like a fixed object and starts behaving like a mechanism. Clothes become adjustable, alive, slightly unstable.

At Hermès, this is not an arbitrary gesture. The house has a history with the zipper. Émile Hermès encountered the technology in North America in the early 1920s and brought it into the maison’s universe; the Bolide, introduced in 1923, became one of the first bags to make the zipper part of luxury rather than merely function. Almost a century later, Vanhée is using the same device to ask a very different question: what happens when an institution built on permanence starts playing with permeability?

This is where Spring/Summer 2027 becomes more interesting than its clothes alone.

Vanhée has been at Hermès since 2014, arriving after years spent between Martin Margiela, Céline and The Row. Her trajectory has always been less about spectacle than construction: discipline, material intelligence, sensuality without obvious seduction. At Hermès, she has progressively pushed those principles towards the body: skin, movement, transparency, openings, straps, cuts, zips.

But after twelve years, the question is no longer whether she understands Hermès.

She clearly does.

The more uncomfortable question is whether Hermès can allow her to change it.

Because there is a tension inside Vanhée’s work that has become increasingly visible. She keeps opening the house’s vocabulary without ever fully breaking it. Leather becomes lighter. Equestrian references become abstract. Utility becomes sensual. The body becomes more exposed, but never entirely unprotected. Zippers create transformation, but within extremely controlled silhouettes.

It is evolution; but perhaps evolution through repetition.

And that is where the “mess” begins.

Not necessarily a mess inside Hermès itself, but the larger mess fashion is currently trying to navigate: heritage versus novelty, craftsmanship versus speed, permanence versus relevance, quiet luxury versus the pressure to constantly produce something new.

Hermès has historically had the luxury of moving slowly. Its power comes precisely from not behaving like everyone else. But slowness can become rigidity if the codes stop moving altogether.

Vanhée seems to understand this perfectly.

Her answer is not to make Hermès younger. It is to make it more permeable.

That distinction matters.

The Spring/Summer collection is full of air: open knits, fine mesh, ultra-light leather, gaps between fabric and skin, hems that move, sleeves that float. Even the leather — perhaps the most untouchable of Hermès materials — is softened, thinned out, made almost weightless.

The result is not a rejection of the house. It is an attempt to loosen its grip on itself.

And perhaps that is why the zipper matters so much.

A zipper is not decoration. It is infrastructure. It changes the relationship between inside and outside. It turns a garment into a proposition: open it, close it, reveal it, control it.

This has been increasingly central to Vanhée’s language. The sensuality she has been building over recent seasons is not really about sex. It is about agency — the possibility of deciding how much of the body, the material, the heritage itself, remains visible.

Which brings us to the next chapter.

In January 2027, Vanhée will take Hermès into haute couture for the first time in the modern history of the house. That is not simply another category to conquer. It is a test of whether her vision can move from the controlled flexibility of ready-to-wear into the absolute precision of couture.

And suddenly, the zipper feels like a perfect metaphor for the moment.

Because Hermès does not need to be unzipped completely.

It needs to open just enough.

The risk, of course, is that perpetual refinement becomes another form of conservatism: Hermès getting lighter, sexier, younger, more fluid; without ever becoming truly different.

Spring/Summer 2027 leaves that question deliberately unresolved.

Maybe that is its most intelligent move.

The zipper opens the garment.

The real question is whether Hermès is ready to open itself.
