Louise Trotter explores the space between seasons for Bottega Veneta SS27, bringing a new lightness to the house’s signature intrecciato through sculptural silhouettes, airy textures, vibrant accents, and refined craftsmanship.
It is hardly surprising, yet it remains one of the most compelling and instantly recognizable elements of Bottega Veneta: the house’s signature intrecciato returns to the runway for the SS27 collection. Under Louise Trotter’s creative direction, the iconic technique is reinterpreted with a fresher, lighter, almost summery sensibility, in keeping with the collection’s central inspiration: the transition from one season to the next, and that in-between moment when the wardrobe gradually begins to transform.
The collection’s palette is largely built around luminous neutrals such as butter yellow, white, and beige, punctuated by deeper shades of black, brown, and blue. Midway through the show, however, the colors become noticeably brighter, with lilac, pink, purple, and orange entering the mix, alongside flashes of vivid red.
Outerwear also plays a significant role, with many pieces seemingly designed with rainy weather in mind. Coats and raincoats are defined by sharply structured shoulders, lending the silhouettes a strong, sculptural presence. Among them, a blue menswear piece stands out, crafted almost entirely from woven leather, with only the sleeves left smooth.
Intrecciato also appears in less conventional forms: on one jacket, it becomes a tactile detail running along the lapels like a raised texture, while on the footwear it covers a pair of soft, fitted white boots that extend above the knee, resembling thigh-high socks more than traditional boots.
It is with white, however, that the collection fully transitions into summer. Lace, openwork crochet, and other perforated techniques lighten the surfaces and reveal glimpses of skin, appearing across knitwear, hats, and even shoes. Sheer fabrics also characterize a number of tops, while midi dresses range from more understated constructions to elaborate decorative treatments, including one covered in three-dimensional black-and-white floral appliqués.
The bags further reinforce the importance of craftsmanship in Trotter’s vision, without necessarily becoming the focal point of each look. Intrecciato returns in different scales and interpretations, applied to silhouettes ranging from soft, roomy shapes to more compact styles, carried by hand or held close to the body. Here, too, the idea of precious everydayness that runs throughout the collection comes through: accessories that are sophisticated in their construction, yet designed to be worn with a sense of ease.
Kendall Jenner closed the show in an asymmetric black dress defined by sculptural shoulders, a balloon silhouette, and a knotted shoulder strap. In the front row, Jacob Elordi, Bottega Veneta brand ambassador and Jenner’s boyfriend, also drew attention. The couple inevitably found themselves in the spotlight, adding another high-profile moment to one of the season’s most anticipated shows.
With SS27, Louise Trotter appears to be finding an increasingly natural balance between Bottega Veneta’s established codes and her own creative vision. Intrecciato remains a defining signature, but moves beyond its traditional expression, appearing across garments, emerging in unexpected details, and entering into dialogue with lace, crochet, and sheer fabrics. The result is a collection that lightens the materiality of Bottega Veneta without sacrificing the house’s exceptional craftsmanship, guiding the wardrobe from the protective character of outerwear toward the freedom and lightness of summer.
