Veils Between does not ask to be looked at. It asks to be felt. And in a fashion system increasingly obsessed with visibility, perhaps that is already a statement.
Presented in Milan on September 22 at CURIEL’s historic Via Montenapoleone address, the Spring Summer 2027 collection moves into the space between skin and garment: the lining beneath the fabric, the shadow created by a pleat, the glimpse of embroidery caught only when the body moves.
It is a fitting direction for a house whose history has always been larger than the clothes themselves.
CURIEL’s story began with Ortensia Curiel in Trieste in 1908, before Gigliola Curiel established the Milanese atelier in 1945 and turned the house into a reference point for post-war Italian elegance. Raffaella Curiel later expanded that vocabulary through couture, prêt-à-porter, art and an intensely cultured idea of fashion; a world in which the dress was never simply decoration, but a meeting point between craftsmanship, identity and society.
That heritage could easily become a burden. Veils Between instead treats it as material.
The collection revisits CURIEL’s established silhouettes – Aria, Roma and Tubino – but refuses the obvious temptation of archival nostalgia. Aria becomes layered and overlapping; Roma is softened through draping; Tubino retains its elongated discipline while allowing the body more space to breathe. The result is couture structure without the stiffness traditionally associated with it.
And this is where the collection becomes most interesting.
Light cotton-linen, translucent pastel velvet, French embroidery and supple leather create a tactile vocabulary in which nothing needs to shout. Pleats become almost architectural, but architecture here is porous. Embroidery and beading appear as traces rather than declarations. Even the palette – limestone grey, soft pink, oat khaki, smoky violet and muddy olive – seems less designed than weathered, recalling Roman walls gradually transformed by time, dust and light.
There is something quietly sociological in that restraint.
For decades, fashion has treated the body as a surface to expose, perfect, discipline or photograph. Veils Between proposes another relationship: clothing as an interval. Not armour, not spectacle, not concealment; but a layer through which the body can remain partially private.
The question is whether quietness can still be radical.
CURIEL seems to answer yes, but cautiously. The collection does not attempt to erase the maison’s couture vocabulary; it loosens it. It does not reject its past; it lets that past breathe differently. In an era when heritage is often reduced to logos, reissues and easily marketable nostalgia, this distinction matters.
Perhaps the most contemporary thing about Veils Between is precisely its refusal to over-explain itself.
The clothes live in movement: between lining and surface, structure and softness, visibility and intimacy. Between what a dress shows and what it keeps for the woman wearing it.
And if the future of a historic Italian house depends on finding new meaning inside its own archive, perhaps the real question is not how much CURIEL can preserve; but how much space its heritage still has to move.
