DIOR ‘Le Château du Tarot’ Spring/Summer 2021 Haute Couture Collection

DIOR @dior unveiled its marvelous Spring/Summer 2021 haute couture collection during Haute Couture Paris 2021 with the film ‘Le Château du Tarot’ directed by Italian filmmaker Matteo Garrone.

Christian Dior was passionate about the divinatory arts and signs of destiny. His autobiography is punctuated with often fateful encounters with visionary personalities: “It will be extraordinary. Your house will revolutionize fashion!” he recalled of a prophecy come true.

Maria Grazia Chiuri, Dior’s creative director, was inspired by tarot cards for this collection as they are “among the keys to accessing the magical realm, to explore the unknown while fearlessly looking deep inside oneself.” With a rich symbolic lexicon and a great character complexity, Chiuri explores the beauty and mysticism of the tarot cards with couture to reconnect with the world’s soul, as well as to prove that there is room for experimentation and possibility in haute couture.

The collection includes evening gowns with abstract constructions, and some pieces feature openwork bodices punctuated with illustrations by Roman artist Pietro Ruff who created a singular deck of cards for the collection.

The presentation is completed with a very incredible film directed by one of Italy’s most high-profile directors, Matteo Garrone, who builds a narrative using the card’s iconography by drawing on the visual force of the Visconti-Sforza tarot. A journey through an enigmatic castle with mystic characters such as the High Priestess, the Empress, Justice, and the Fool referencing the Tarot’s characters invite the viewer to look at the world from a new perspective.

This quest surpasses gender boundaries, presenting a synthesis of masculine and feminine in new heraldic mythology evoking the enchanted worlds Matteo Garrone loves.

The aesthetic of the 15th-century Visconti-Sforza tarot influenced the collection’s use of color, with many looks glinting with burnished gold accents.
