We all seem to be in need of fresh air and a more optimistic state of mind. Donatella Versace knew how to translate this into upbeat and playful designs for their 2022 Resort collection.
“I think there’s a renewed sense of optimism right now and I wanted this collection to speak to that,” said Versace, “This season is about having fun again and it feels right to put something positive into the world. We’ll never return to the old world or to the old ‘normal,’ there’s no going backwards. This is what the new now looks like to me.”
The A-line dresses stand out, reminiscing the sixties, with hemlines slashed very short. The whole collection shows very polished looks, even when it comes to active-wear, in a clear reaction to this rather quiescent times for all. The prints remind us of the 70’s, the decade of Versace’s debut.
Their new print, called ‘Medusa Music’, comes in with clashing acid and pastel tones and showing some psychedelic tints. Swirling patterns surround the bubble text that reads “Love. Versace. Medusa.” We can find the same patterns in tights, shirts and jackets.
Also featured is the chain print, which translates the brand’s affinity for including fashion jewelry into garments, and it’s featured in designs for both men and women. Finally, the Versace signature greca, the brand’s own take on the monogram for this logo-mania times, is presented in many pieces, specially in menswear.
The mix of textures is wide, fringes, a very smooth latex in colors like baby blue and bubblegum pink, lurex jacquard, some funky takes on tweed and classic leather, all coming together to make a head-turning collection that managed to put all this very different pieces together in a cohesive and attractive way.
In spite of the colourful spread, black isn’t left out of the picture. We can see black in leather, complemented with other textures and mixed in prints with colors like lilac, lime green and golden yellow. Metallics did an appearance too, in both a more edgy style, with opalescent pieces and lurex as well as a more classic take, the timeless golden chains paired with black.
Accessories include mini bags, stylish genderless travel tote bags, oversized sunglasses, bandanas and barrettes for the hair. Of course, La Medusa bag couldn’t be left out, positioning itself as a must have for every fan of the brand, it’s seen across the collection in new funky pastel colors.
When it comes to shoes, chunky platforms took over the collection, and they are featured in a full range of options from boots to mary jane’s to sandals. High-heeled stilettos embellished with chains accompanied the looks with more classic lines. There are also sneakers that come with the Versace grec showing in the sides of the soles.
Resort collections come out middle season for those who feel that six months is too long a wait for new items to come out, and it seems appropiate for a proposal that clearly shows how eager we are to leave the dull loungewear days behind us, and jump into new, exciting adventures. It’s all about having fun, feeling good again and reconnecting with the world. You can expect to see more of this positive, buoyant sentiment in runways to come.
