Tokyo James presents its Autumn/Winter 2021 collection during Milan Fashion Week. ‘OGIDI OKUNRIN’ or ‘The Strong Man’ is the name of this collection, which looks at the concept of unity and masculinity through the gaze of the modern Nigerian man. Being true to its origins, the brand explores the idea of intersection and the unification of masculinity. James believes that there is always strength in unity and offers a fresh perspective in menswear fuelled by his dual Nigerian and British heritage.

This collection is based on the different points of view and possible expressions of masculinity, thus questioning the evolution of the modern man. The pieces displayed in this collection feature a wide range of textures from sequins to weaving and embossing that play with the dualities of masculinity, stimulating our feelings to question it. The silhouettes are influenced by the 1960’s peacock era and the African revision of the traditional British Dandy, fuelled by the designer’s dual Nigerian and British heritage. This results in a combination of vivid and muted colors and a reinvention of the traditional suit, mixing textures and fabrics seen with the use of embossed leather with fine knit, and ballistic nylon.
Using the dualism principle, the designer shows rigidity and fluidity in his designs using details such as diagonal cuts, ruching, chained hardware and quilting with a diversity of textured fabrics to fashion surrealistic menswear fit. In addition, the brand launches its ‘Ata Rodo’ (“Pepper”) Bag, which is a staple in African culture but is also used around the world showcasing the intersection and commonality between Africa and the rest of world.
