“Sakura Sky”: A Collaboration of Saint Laurent and Unfolds a Fireworks Spectacle

Envision a world where the Earth could become a sea of pink cherry blossoms. This was brought to life in the mesmerizing fireworks spectacle, “Sakura Sky.”

Chinese artist Cai Guo-Qiang partnered with Saint Laurent to create “When the Sky with Sakura,” a daytime fireworks display, a first for Japan. Set against the Yokura beach backdrop in Iwaki, a city recovering from the devastation of the 2011 earthquake and ensuing tsunami, the performance aimed to inspire hope and posit a blossoming future.

The installation, with a breadth of 400 meters and height of 130 meters, painted the sky with ephemeral “cherry blossoms,” symbolizing the potential for rejuvenation even amidst despair.

To commemorate this extraordinary event, Saint Laurent curated a short documentary which was premiered worldwide on their official website. Additionally, the film was simultaneously showcased on the giant screens of Times Square, New York; Piccadilly Circus, London; Grand Gateway, Shanghai; Shamao Street, Chengdu; and Shinjuku and Harajuku in Tokyo.
