In early 2021, social media stars Kylie and Kendall Jenner jetted off to Costa Careyes, a secluded oceanfront resort on Mexico’s Pacific Coast, frequented by the international glitterati. The sisters luxuriated in a stunning marigold-hued villa, Sol de Oriente, which is now available for purchase at $15 million.
Costa Careyes was conceived in 1968 by Italian artist, banker, and real estate developer Gian Franco Brignone. He envisioned a high-end retreat for artists, celebrities, and affluent bohemians to unwind and find inspiration. Over the years, numerous architects were commissioned to create fantastical, colorful homes built with skilled local artisans, blending Mediterranean and palapa-style influences.
With only around 100 residences and a boutique beachfront hotel, the secluded resort has attracted A-listers such as Tom Ford, Robert De Niro, Mick Jagger, and Uma Thurman. Careyes also hosts Ondalinda, an exclusive annual festival celebrating art, spirituality, and wellness.
Sol de Oriente, designed by French architect Jean-Claude Galibert in collaboration with Brignone, epitomizes privacy. The star-shaped main villa, known as The Castle, boasts three deluxe bedroom suites, open-air living spaces, and terraces. The property also includes ocean-view casitas, a two-story tower, and a funicular for ease of access. A pale green counterpart, Sol De Occidente, lies just across Playa Careyitos Bay.
Following Brignone’s recent passing at age 96, his legacy is being carried forth by his family and heirs. Sol de Oriente is currently available through Denise Moreno and Gordon MacGeachy at Carolwood Estates.
