The first official trailer for House of Gucci, the highly anticipated crime film from director Ridley Scott has been released.
The film is scripted by Becky Johnston and Roberto Bentivegna and it is based on “The House Of Gucci: A Sensational Story of Murder, Madness, Glamour, and Greed”, a 2001 book by Sara Gay Forden, who worked covering the Italian fashion industry from Milan for more than 15 years.
The film starring Oscar winner Lady Gaga (A Star Is Born, American Horror Story) and two-time nominee Adam Driver (Marriage Story, BlacKkKlansman) depicts the events and aftermath of the death of Maurizio Gucci (Driver), grandson of the founder of the iconic brand, who was murdered by a hit man hired by his ex wife, Patrizia Reggiani (Gaga).
Prior to the release of the trailer, the first official posters of the film were shared with the main actors in their roles. After these images, the focus of the conversation revolved around the incredible transformation of Leto, who is unrecognizable in his role as Paolo Gucci. The all-star cast includes Al Pacino as Aldo Gucci, Jeremy Irons as Rodolfo Gucci and Jack Huston as Domenico De Sole, former president and CEO of Gucci Group. The ensemble is completed with Camille Cottin, Salma Hayek and Reeve Carney.
The production didn’t come without some controversy, since some time ago, when the first official images for the film was publicated, Patrizia Gucci (Guccio Gucci’s great-granddaughter and Maurizio’s cousin) gave an interview to the Associated Press in which she made a statement on behalf of the family, making it clear that they were absolutely against Scott’s movie. Patrizia Gucci said she reached out to Ridley Scott’s wife, Giannina Facio, for clarification on the scope of the film, but has not received any reply.
“We are truly disappointed. I speak on behalf of the family,” Gucci told The Associated Press on Wednesday. “They are stealing the identity of a family to make a profit, to increase the income of the Hollywood system….Our family has an identity, privacy. We can talk about everything. but there is a borderline that cannot be crossed.” she said, and finally stated that her family will decide what further action they might take after seeing the film.
Meanwhile, since the fashion house doesn’t have any ties to the Gucci family since 1993 (when Maurizio sold his remaining stake), it is cooperating with the “The House of Gucci” production, opening its archives to the film company for wardrobe and props.
House of Gucci will be produced via Scott Free Productions, the banner of Ridley and Giannina Scott, along with Kevin J. Walsh and Mark Huffam, and it is set for release in the US on November 24, 2021.
